These knives looks pretty nice. I was at a Cabela's store near my hometown today and saw both a regular size and Mini Fast Draw on the shelves. I've owned a few Gerber knives including their multi-tools and they seem to be very well made. Any idea what steel the blades are? The website only says "high carbon stainless" and the packaging says "400 series stainless".

I agree. Gerber knives have become a little worse than Smith & Wesson. Yeah, I'd rather have a Smith now than a Gerber.

Well, that sums it up. How are the CRKT folders with the Outburst assisted open mechanism? The Koji Hara Ichi knife catches my eye. What other assisted openers are worth looking into?

It's really a shame about the low end steel in the Gerber Fast Draw, I have the full sized version and from a design point of view it's actually pretty good.

I like the side button lock, it gives it the look of an auto ... it also has a hidden flipper that you can actuate from a recess on the handle. I also like that it rides low in the pocket and isn't too big. All in all the design was well thought out, but as others mentioned the grade of steel is suspect.

Regarding other assisted openers , CRKT doesn't always use the best steel so you have to read the specs and I don't own any to recommend.

I think Kershaw is probably the best at making high quality AO knives, most are 440A but they use other grades as well. For around the same price range as the Gerber you can check out the Blur. Walmart carries the Tactical Blur for about $49.00, very good for the price. If you want something smaller I recommend the Leek.

If you want to spend a little more I can highly recommend this one, this is a larger folder

I have the G10 version ( it was a limited run) , it's really a bargain, this dealer is good too.

Buck Rush or Sirus are Assisted openers, and can be found in ATS 34 version for around 50 bucks each. Solid knives IMHO Z

The Buck Rush looks like it will be perfect, and it comes in ATS-34. Thanks much for your help!
