I have a mid 80's vintage Gerber Folding Sportsman II, and I can't find any literature on the steel used for the blade. It's highly polished, fine grained, and seems easy to sharpen, with a durable edge. It almost behaves like a tool steel, but I can't imagine its not stainless given it's intended use.

I'm guessing it's probably 440C, but does anybody know for sure? It's a great knife that probably ought to be re-introduced!

If anyone's interested, I have an extra one of these in virtually mint condition, with sheath. :)

Does anybody know what steel Gerber uses in their EZ-Out Magnum LST Jr knives? Thanks.

I bought a folding sportsman in 1978 and the literature I have does state that it was 440C...in 1978

mnblade,

contact me offline about the one your spare.

Thanks - now that you mention it, I have a Gerber catalog from 1982 that would no doubt answer my question once and for all - if I had any idea where I stuck it.

I've heard 440C often enough that I'm convinced, and your information seems to confirm that hypothesis. I can't imagine they changed the blade steel from 1978 to 1983, although I suppose it's possible.

That was long before the super-steel-of-the-week became popular.

440C steel has been and still is a good useful steel. I have been happy with it over the past 3 decades. In 1978 440C was a super steel althouhg if memory serves 154CM had just come out .

Still a valid question, which I have moved to its own thread in the Bernard Levine Forum. Likely that only those folks would know the answer at this point in time.
