Last week I left my Leatherman Wave at work for the first time in 4 years. I thought to myself on the way home "I could go back and get it, but I'm sure it will be fine for 12 hours".

I arrived the next morning to find that it was indeed gone :grumpy:

After crying myself to sleep, I decided I MUST replace it, but didn't want to spend too much on yet another Multitool!

After looking on eBay, I came across a brand new in pack Gerber Freehand for $29.96 after a 25% off sale! A bargain since the comparable price in the UK is not far off $200! I bought it immediately, and now I'm looking for any info.

From the looks of it, it has several better features than the Wave that it replaces. First is the one hand opening pliers, as it really was a pain trying to open up the Wave with one hand. Apparently these open with only flick of the wrist.

The blades are also thicker, which is definitely no bad thing. The tools look like they can be opened very easily too, but not sure exactly how that works.

When I do get this, it is going straight on my belt and not leaving my person!

So does anyone own one, or know more about how well the pliers and the tools open?

What kind of Leatherman did you loose?
The old or the new style?
Let me know if you want to trade it for a Brand new Wave!

It was the old Wave that I had for four years. Fantastic little tool, but to be honest, I'm looking forward to trying out the Gerber Freehand as it seems to be better than the Wave on paper. Only time will tell!

The Freehand will not be a direct replacement for the Wave since it does not feature a Wood Saw or a File. For that price point it is a very good deal though. The strongest points of the Freehand are the 2 large knife blades, the scissors and the pliers. The strongest point of the Wave is it's overall versatility. It's a trade-off, what do you use more? Everything or just a few things?

Keep in mind that the Freehand is also considerably larger than the older Wave.

I own about the old wave and find that when i really want a saw or a file use a saw and a file (especially the file). Gerber freehand-Neato!
