Gerber Freeman Folder vs the AG 110

Hey everyone.
Semi new to the forum in terms of posting. Done a lot of lurking and reading, but not much in the way of discussion.
So, here’s my situation: I’m in the market for a new folder, and my steel of choice this time around is going to be S30V. The two knives I’ve narrowed my selection two are the Alaskan Guide 110 and the Gerber Freeman folder. They fit my size requirements and fall under my price point. I’m torn as to whether or not I want the clip point or the drop point. This would be a general use/sometimes field knife.

Here’s my problems that I’m looking for some counsel on:
1) Gerber is an unknown quantity to me. I’ve never used any of their knives before, but I know several people who speak highly of them.
2) Buck is not an unknown quantity to me, in a bad way. I’ve owned buck knives and 110’s in the past, and had bad experiences with most of them. Some that I’ve had have crapped out on me after only a year or so, and it didn’t seem to me that the quality was up to taking hard use. I wasn’t doing anything dumb or damaging to them, they were simple EDC knives that just didn’t last for me. I haven’t quite been able to get over that stigma so that is what my primary issue is with the AG 110. Still, I’ve always gotten great use out of anything that I have bought that has cabela’s name attached to it…
3) Drop Point vs. Clip Point: I like the longer heft of the clip point AG 110, but I also am a big believer in the all around strength of the drop point. A super pointy tip is not really of concern to me as I’m not going to be wandering around shanking stuff with this knife, it’s a EDC cutting tool/field knife, pure and simple.

So, I’m up to any suggestions, help, etc. In happier times I’d have just bought both and been done with it but I’m currently living on a budget saving up for my wife’s 30th 

I'd get the Freeman out of those two. I GREATLY prefer drop points.

That said, have you looked at the Buck Vantage Pro? Possibly the best value in knives. I'm not a huge fan of the clip, but it's growing on me. Love that knife. Can't beat it for $50...

No I haven't that one wasn't even in the running but I'll take a look at it

My experience with the Buck 110 has been different from yours. I have three Buck 110's (An AG, a custom with BG42 steel and a plain jane) and use all three for hard use functions. I have not had one "crap out" other than some slight blade play in the plain jane model. I find the 110 is well built and good value. I have used the AG model for fire fighting, camping, hunting and general outdoor bushcraft.

Could you elaborate on some of the problems you have had with the 110?

I have no experience with the Gerber.

I just looked up the Gerber Freeman:

...strong resemblance to the Boker Magnum Reflection...

I'm just going to assume that Boker ripped off Gerber here, only difference is that the Boker is a folder...

Or gerber ripped off boker...

Based on some other knives I've seen, I'm pretty sure Boker did the ripping....

Gerber's had this one out for awhile now.

For what it's worth - I've used both - Gerbers and Bucks over the past 40 years and they are a carpshoot for value - both fairly good - although the older Gerbers get the nod over the more recent ones..... as to Drop point or Clip - again a crap shoot- clip gives you a bit more control over the point but and is more precise for skinning! - so - either one
Peace

I have no experience with the Gerber.

Well, just by way of example, lets take the last "plane jane" buck 110 I owned, several years ago. It was your standard 420HC ( I think, it was around $40 from my local hardware store) blade. I had it for about seven months total, used entirely for cutting purposes, and not anything difficult. Boxes, tape, paper, rope, various other items. Even used it on some cuts of meat when I was camping. This was back when I was working at a restaurant, and one day I was cutting open a box of pepperoni from the freezer, and it looks like the tip of the blade hit the the bag of frozen pepperoni, and the tip of the blade just straight snapped off.

Now, I can understand something like that happening if you abuse the blade, but come on, FROZEN PEPPERONI? Just to make a point I borrow a cheap chinese potmetal folder from a co coworker and stabbed that stupid bag of pepperoni about 20 times in frustration. That blade didn't break.

the other buck 110 I had, blade stayed intact but developed ridiculous amounts of blade play.
