Anyone here have the Gerber Freeman S30V? It's advertised in Cabelas' site, and it looks nice, but I want to know what you think for those who own one.

I'm starting a field knife collection and I want one from each "tough" steel, i.e., CM-154, S30V, 1095, 5160, D2, etc. So far, I have the RAT RC-4, Ontario RC-5, Becker BK-2, and Ontario RD-6.

Any recommendations?

If you're looking for "tough", then anything by Gerber should be down toward the bottom of the list. In fact, of the steels you listed, I'd only consider one of them "tough", but then it seems some folks have different definitions of that.

Oh, yeah? Which steel?

I'm still a rookie on knives. I know the RAT Cutlery members in here say good things about 1095 and other carbon steel. I plan on using and abusing my knives in the field. The knife that holds up best will be the favorite!

My Big 5 Sporting Goods knives just don't cut it ... they dull easily and tend to chip on heavy chopping tasks.

a freeman folder that is excellent!
Not all Gerbers are Garbage, alot of them leave a bit to be desired but i love the freeman line. The S30 V is also the Made in Portland version:thumbup: I looked at one from cabellas a few years ago but couldnt swing the price.
Always wanted to pick one up though, nice looking knife and even comes with a leather sheath instead of the cordura(?) Loved the overall look of it, like the Dark evil version of the regular freeman line:D
Mine takes a decent edge and holds it alright, granted i'm not abusing the heck outta it but it is easy to sharpen. Not sure with the S30V
I like the feel of the freeman just a big folder, not really practical to carry daily at least for me.
Good luck
