Gerber Gator 154cm? Can you tell?

So I purchased a Gerber Gator the other day and was surprised when I noticed
the blade simply says Oregon USA on it. Most of my knives say what type of
blade material is used (e.g., my Spyderco says AUS-8 on the blade). No where
on the box did it say either. The place I bought it from advertised it as 154CM.

I was talking to someone that mentioned some of them are made from a cheaper grade 400-series?
The box was labeled Gerber Gator model 6079. Is there a simle way to determine what type of material
a blade is actually made of? I have tried to get to the gerberblades.com site to check, but have not
had much luck.

Also, the blade edge is ground much more coursly than I am used to, you can see the
grind marks. Is that normal?

Thanks

I found the same coarse grind on an E-Z Out Plain Edge that I bought last year. The grind marks were so bad that when I resharpened the blade, parts of it crumbled into little pieces on my stone. My older E-Z Out Combo Edge(bought in about '99) did not have bad grind marks and worked well for me. I don't carry the newer knife and I don't buy Gerber knives any more.

I have heard several stories about a decrease in Gerber quality for their lower cost knives since the Fiskars buyout. I do not know about their higher end knives.
Maybe the grind marks are the new normal for Gerber?
They should not be normal on any decent blade no matter what the steel.

The Gerber Gator with 154CM is/was Model 6064.

(I dont' know if they still make it in 154CM.)

The 6079 that you have uses 420HC.
