I have one and use it in the yard all the time for miscellaneous small digging and chopping chores. The knife will sharpen up quite nice. The knife is held in by a light magnet and will pop out if you go throwing it around. It will rust, but no big deal for the way I beat on it. Knife blade wont or hasn't rusted. I have enjoyed having the combo and used both frequently.

Gerber axes and hatchets are made by Fiskars in Finland and are of very high quality and value. The blade steel has very god edge retention and some higher end models are coated with some sort of PTFE-layer to inhibit rust and enhance splitting due to reduced friction. And oh, the blade will never pop off the shaft due to the handle that has been molded over the axe head.

I've used almost every Fiskars axe model and have been more than satisfied with their performance, but I don't know about those axe/knife combos. Sounds like a good idea if you remove the knife while splitting.

I haven't ever had the knife pop out when I was using the axe, but removing the knife might be a good safety thing during heavy use. Knife has popped out once when I tossed the axe a few feet away.

And the sale price in that link is about the everyday price here at Academy and Wally mart. Might even be a few dollars less at these places. Shop around.
