Hey all,
I've been visiting this site for awhile now, but this is my 1st post. Are there any reviews/opinions on this Gerber Axe? I think it is an interesting idea, just for a tool to keep in my trunk, but wanted to get some opinions before I bought one.
Thanks!

I have a large Fiskars (same company as Gerber) Ax and a couple of the small hatchets that Menards sells in the garden dept. They are outstanding tools. The Gerber hatchets come with a belt type sheath/cover and I wouldn't mind getting one of those either (they cost almost double what the Fiscars ones do though). They are worth the money. Welcome to the forums...ed.

My local Academy store has them for ~$10.00 LESS than the Axe(with plain handle!) by itself! The sell the knife for ~$12.00!
So you save ~$20.00 with the set.

The only thing that worries me is that it uses a MAGNETIC lock to hold the knife in the grip of the axe.

At the price, I COULD NOT force myself to walk past without buying it:( (I NEED help)

The knife is VERY dull, but LOOKS easy to sharpen.
The axe is profiled like a wedge and looks like it will need a LOT of work to cut correctly(which is why I went and bought a GB axe last month...So I would not have to deal with things like this...sigh....)

THanks for the responses guys. I my just have to bit the bullit and get it to try out. James are you in LE back in Beaumont? My wife has a cousin who is a sherrifs deputy there and another cousin who was an officer but was killed @ 2 years ago. Last name was Gernale. Ring any bells. Anyway love that town, I was just there over New Years. Think I'll swing by Walmart tomorrow and pick up the axe. Going camping with my daughters girl scout troop tomorrow, last time we went they forgot the portable stove and I almost ruined my Sog Seal cutting firewood for the shepards stove.

No, not in law enforcement. I work for Department of Human Services(well actually we are now Health and Human Services Comission...) as a computer support person(Regional Systems Specialist to be exact.:D)
I do not know if WallyWorld has them.
Have you looked at the http://www.zzstove.com/ Zip stove? I have heard some good things about them.

I have not seen those stoves, but I do carry a ezbit and some extra fuel tabs in my kit in the trunk. It might not be the greatest stove in the world but it does what I need it to. And the fuel tabs are great fire-starters in a pinch.
So I picked up the Combo Axe at Wal Mart before we left, and like you said, out of the package it was rather dull. Used my Spydeco sharpener on it and it got a pretty good edge, got through some light work on the camping trip, mostly splitting Avocado and some oak for the stove again. The knife is quite secure in the handle, my only qualm with it is that the blade is a bit thin. My benchmade folder is thicker.
But all in all a nice axe for what it is and what I wanted it to do.

Watch when you stow the knife....If you are not careful the magnet will pull the edge of the blade right into it rather forcibly, dulling it. I do not mind the thin blade, because with the axe around you should be using it for things that need a thick bladed knife...Thin blades CUT better for the same sharpness, and what you are looking for in a axe companion is something to do fine work with...I would have preferred a less 'tactical' style blade shape(a Mora would have been just about perfect) with the same grip... But it should do, AFTER, a bit of sharpening.
