Looking at a gerber gator and I ask this because I couldn’t find anything through the search here or on google concerning d2 steel? however there is a vintage Gerber Gator on eBay claiming to be d2 steel. I never thought they were made from d2 as a vintage knife or ever made from d2. I know maybe 154cm or the japanese version of it... more description here

Links removed, read the site rules.

So anything about being made from
D2 steel? Thanks

Rules say you can't link to eBay ads, you should edit it out before getting warning points.

Iirc they made them in 420hc and 154cm.

Gerber made fixed blades in d2, so maybe it's possible they had one at some point in time, but I don't think it was any time recently.

The knife doesn't say d2 on it. But if it is vintage, maybe they did make them in d2 back in the old days.

The negative feedback on that seller says he's selling fake merchandise though..

Not that it matters now, but I'll add more anyways.
If you go to the Gerber website you'll see that this looks exactly like the most current Gators, which confirms the " really new " impression I got looking at it
( I shoulda known as they went to the Portland Oregon mark not too long ago )
I know they were stamped for a long time ,but don't know when they stopped.
A quick Google search did show that they were previously etched like this but with their old logo...ect.
I'd say that even if the seller considers 10 years old to be vintage he's lying, not to mention this most definitely being a standard 420 gator if it's even a legitimate Gerber gator.
When they used a different steel they marked it.

Did you read the description of the knife?
RARE VINTAGE GERBER GATOR LARGE 4" BLADE D2 FOLDER FOLDING KNIFE EXCELLENT SOG X
Does this seem legit? Stay away please.

I think that some of not many at sellers looking to unload will use many names in the title to bring in more results for a search. That’s why the wasn’t too put off However. Being the case either way I am miffed that I don’t have enough background knowledge to tell this person he is so very wrong to mislead the potential buyers.

I have “helped”a seller or two before for info I knew for a fact was either missing or incorrect in or about an auction but this time maybe I can leave it someone more qualified who happens to read it

Ebay and Amazon are filled with these Un honest clone sellers. Report the ad and move on. Probably best to avoid these platforms but if not, you can learn the ways clone sellers sell and avoid them.

Its horrible that they scam so many people.

There have been the normal Gators in "mystery stainless" and some in 154CM, but I've never seen one in D2.

You've got to ask Gerber. I've never heard of one in D2, but it wouldn't surprise me. They've been made in 440a, 425m, 420Hc, ATS34, 154cm, S30v through the years, so it isn't a jump to think D2 wouldn't wind up as a special edition somewhere. The Gator and EZ Out have long been the favorite base knife for mid priced limited editions in the Gerber line.

No, they never made it in D2. That one might be real, not sure.

Garbage either way.

The Gator line is one of the few Gerbers that isn't garbage. They're fine, not great, not bad, not an incredibly durable design, but fine for a cheap knife even in the fairly miserable 440a days.

That one popped up in an ebay search for me as well. I doubt they ever did a run of Gators in D2, but they did use D2 in the Metolius for a run.

I was thinking they “may” have used it in Premium runs? Not sure if the they ever made it to that level for Premium rum
