Hello,

I thought I'd share some information about the Gerber Gator that I came across accidently and ask a question about it. First the information: the new guy at work who just finished a stint with the US Coast Guard was issued a Gerber Gator. He said he has several because they'd replace your knife if it got chipped or lost. Now for the question: what do you guys think about the Gator? Thanks,

S.

P.S. Does anbody know which steel Gerber uses on their LST Magnum knives?

Gators are a great work knife, especially if one isn't fond of linerlocks. I've had one for almost 10 years and its got great handle material, good erognomics and outstanding lock-up, my only complaint was lack of a thumbstud, but they've added that to their lineup with the "Stud Gator."

I'm not too fond of the clip point Gator, but I really like the ATS34 drop point version. The handle's a bit bulky but it's also one of the most comfortable that I've handled.

I have a buddy that I backpack with that has had a gator for a few years now. he brags about alot and seems to be quite pleased with it.

It's non-serrated. He cleaned rabbits with it once too.

Cheap and efffective.

Does anyone know what steel they use for the fixed blade versions? Their ads and little description blurbs on the knife e-retail sites don't say specifically.

My Gerber catalogue says "High Carbon Stainless Steel" on all of the fixed blades and 154CM steel on the Gator,Gator Serator,Gatormate and Stud Gator
