Recommendation? Gerber Gators?

Back in the 90s, my brother bought an original Gerber Gator, and I got the Magnum.

I remember them both being just excellent in the hand; good enough to warrant a belt pouch for carry. I think I could cut all day with a Gator and not have any hot spots on the hand.

Fast forward to modern days, and I want something better than 420 steel, and preferably US-made. Lo and behold! They make/made TWO more steel options, and both of those models are US-made. (links below)

154CM w/drop point:

S30V w/clip point and opening hole: (discontinued, but BHQ still seems to have some)

Any of you have one? How are they? Any surprises?

One of the most comfortable knives I've ever handled.

I have always carried knives in my back pocket. Besides being a good knife I always appreciated how the Gator wouldn't slip out of my pocket due to the rubber handle.

I have three vintage examples, one which was a gift from a friend, another purchased here, and my first one, which rode on my belt with me all the way from Scout level zero to my Eagle Court of Honor ceremony. I will never part with that one, and most likely won't part with the others either. They are indeed excellent knives in the ergonomics department, and I like that these were all from their days when they made almost all of their knives here.

Smaug Smaug you might want to lose those links - BHQ is no longer a supporting dealer (and GerberGear never was, afaik)

I had the Gator and the GatorMate. I preferred the GatorMate by a large margin (but I kept the Gator until I sold both here)

My first time handling one of these was at an NRA dinner.
I just have never cared fo these knives. Not really sure why. They are fine knives. One of the few things Gerber has gotten right.

I would like to see Gerber offer one for salt water use.

I love my Gerber Gator 650 in 154CM I bought in 2006. It was my EDC for many years, and still looks new. I mainly love how it grips so well even with wet hands. It still has the sharp factory edge on it. I carried it for backup self defense if needed. It has cut some rope 2 times, twine a few times, and opened a few packages.
