looking for a decent compact fixed blade, something good for edc. so far the Ghostrike has caught my eye. Anyone used it before? The good things and bad things about it?

And if anyone else has another suggestions then that would be appreciated.

For the money, they don't seem to be bad. I have thought about getting one a few times. However, I'm not a big fan on skeletalized handles.

What's your budget? For around $50, they are a solid SHTF edc choice. For $100, they lose their luster a bit with more options available. At $300, lots of makers offer much better choices of EDC fixed blade knives.

I've not handled one, so I cannot say for certain, but Gerber has hit and miss with quality, mainly due to cheap Chinese manufacturing. If you can get one under $50, then try it out. Keep in mind you can get an Izula or Izula II for less than that.

The Gerber Ghoststrike is neither a good EDC option nor a good knife for the money. If you haven't used a knife without scales before, it can be relatively uncomfortable for some cutting tasks. The dubious ergonomics of this model don't help. It's also got a funky sheath and uses a low-end blade steel.

If you are looking for a nice EDC fixed blade in this price range, check out the Real Steel Receptor. The ergonomics are excellent. The jimping actually makes sense. The scales feel good in hand. It's compact enough for discrete carry but big enough for most EDC needs. It's actually a joy to use. The sheath is better and you'll get a better blade steel too.

The only quirk is that they market the Receptor as a neck knife. Don't believe it. It's just right as an EDC belt knife. It carries well on either a Tek-Lok or soft loops.

Norwest, There are most likely hundreds of small fixed EDC type blades on the market. Here are 2 that I own and you can't go wrong with. 1095 carbon steel, coated, USA made, warranty's cant be beat, sheathes included and 3rd party upgrades available. Esee Izula (pictured with handle and sheath upgrade) and Tops Baja 3.0. (stock). Between around $60. to $85. Oh yea and make sure buy from a quality vendor like DLT or KnifeCenter.

You have so many options, it's enough to make your head spin. TOPS is always good, especially if you don't mind 1095 steel. Buck has many models that fit your criteria. Kabar has some. Just about any maker you want to name has at least one. Good heat treatment is more important than steel type. Companies with good reputations got them by making good knives.

Pretty much any knife will cut stuff, some longer than others. Some are harder to sharpen. Carbon steel or stainless? Some are less comfortable to carry, don't forget to look at sheaths, as well. Do some research, don't just go by recommendations. What works for me might not work as well for you.

Mostly, though, just buy one. Use it. See how it works for you. Buy your next one with the things you learned in mind. The odds of finding your forever EDC fixed blade the first time are pretty slim. Most of us have more knives than we really need, for just that reason.

for at least 30 years "Gerber" = "Garbage". Worse than the made in Pakistan Frost knife shaped objects.

Get a Buck 113 (available in the Custom shop with S30V, if you don' like their 420HC) or if you can find one a Buck 877 (white handle made in USA. The early black handle were made offshore) a Schrade/Old Timer Sharp Finger, either pre-2004 made in USA (440A) or post 2004 made (7CR14MoV) offshore, for a good small EDC fixed blade.

If you want a blade over 3.5 to 3.75 inches, get a Mora 511.

The sheath uses two little metal rollers to retain the blade. Since the sheath is ambidextrous it is impossible to draw the blade without hitting the metal. Gerber 420hc is no match for the metal in the rollers. No ghost strike.

The Becker BK14 is my favorite fixed blade to carry right now. I don’t like knives on my belt, but with an Azwelke taco sheath I can wear it unobtrusively at 11:00 in a horizontal crossdraw, or I can just stick it in a pocket, which is what I prefer. The other knives I like to carry are a mini Skrama and a short-bladed Anza that goes in a pocket slip from CK.
