Just got the Air Ranger II in the mail today and thought I'd share my thoughts. First fit and finish;Opens smooth, lockup is secure, no blade play whatsoever. The aluminum handle slabs are rounded on the edges (tumbled?) and textured making for an astoundingly comfortable and secure grip. The blade profile and factory edge are exellent. Now for the standout feature...THIS THING IS STURDY...I have always wondered why people get so fired up about super steels on thier folders when everyone knows that any chain is only as strong as it's weakest link and the weakest link on a folding knife is the pivot. This thing has one big fat pivot, way to go Gerber! A high serrated thumb ramp is another plus. The blade steel is not marked but I believe it is 440A(okay by me).On the down side, the pocket clip seems to have been designed by someone with a deep pathological hatred of pockets, after only five or six times in and out of my pocket, there is already damage! One thing is for sure, it won't be falling out easily. Gonna carry for a few days, will report...

How long is the blade, how sharp, and how easy to sharpen is it?
I saw one at the PX and strongly considered buying it, but I have an AFCK, so I thought I would hold off.
However, the AFCK is ATS34 and a pain to sharpen.

The blade is 3.75" and made of AUS-8A not 440A as I reported earlier. While I haven't had to sharpen this particular knife yet I can tell you from someone who is sharpen-challenged, AUS is easier to sharpen than ATS 34 any day.

I carry a Gerber Air Ranger as my new EDC and I am extremely happy and impressed with this knife.
The craftsmanship and fit-n-finish is nearly perfect and it is one tough knife.
Not too big, but not too small, and is very comfortable to use.
Overall, it has to be one of the best kept secrets in the knife world.

Allen.

I'm resurrecting this long-dead thread to ask whether anyone else carries this knife, the Gerber Harsey Air Ranger II (larger blade, 3.75" with the liner lock blocking safety). I've been carrying mine off and and on for years, stopping only because I am able in my job to carry fixed blades or needing to have multi-tools like a Paratool or GAK or wanting super light and old-school like an Opinel. It's still going strong, the nylon washers are still there, the scales are a bit worn but hold their grip, and the edge still cuts anything I put it to. Last-ditch self defense is still an option if it came to that; there's nothing on the market that would make it obsolete in that regard, obviously.

Regardless, anyone still have/carry/use the larger Air Ranger II? Share your thoughts, experiences. How's it holding up for you, what did you like/dislike, what does it accomplish well for you, what are its drawbacks, etc.

I have had 2 of these over the years and think that they are the best.
