I own a Gerber Mark II that I bought in Hawaii in '89. Wasp waisted the serrations on both sides. On one side the the Gerber "Sword in the rock" logo on the other is "H5161S". My question is what is the blade steel on this thing. It is about indestructible, I carried it in Desert Storm and used it for about eveything. Is "H5161S" the type of steel in this knife. I know of 5160 steel, supposed to be very durable. Any ideas? No pics, waiting on my digital camera to come in the mail...

I may be wrong but I think the number you are refering to may be the serial number. My Guardian purchased in 1984 has a similar number. I remember reading in the product insert that this was the serial number.

I forget the meaning of the letters, something about the steel. There were only about 50000 of these made. The problem is I do not have my reference material here with me.

Like I said I may be mistaken and I am sure somebody here will let me know.

Thanks...I keep searching but I can't seem to find any reference on the blade steel. Thanks for answering.

I believe the old Gerbers were 440C (from ads in old magazines), I have a folder from the 70´s and it sure feels like that, is it stainless ?, if it´s stainless it can´t be 5160.

Edited to add:

I just found this table:

http://www.gerberknives.com/militarysurvival.htm

Apparently the Gerber Mark II´s were forged L6 from 1966 to 1972, ground L6 from 1973 to 1979, 440C from 1980 to 1996 and 440A from 1997 to 1999.

The serial number H5160S does check with 1989 for year of manufacture.

There is a 2002 limited edition in 154CM.
