Hola dudes. Okay....several folks here don't like the Gerbers. "Please don't heiii't me a'gain ." My love is a personal thang and is tied back to my youth. My first "real" knife was a Gerber...so the brand has sentimental value to me. (I remember driving as a newly licensed 16 yr old way way back when to go get it...proud moment and purchase for me)

Okay, I have my eyes on a Gerber Hinderer. Price is around $50-60 depending on where I buy it. I know that buys a lot of other brands as well but I wondered if anyone has actually handled the knife, used it, etc. I could not find a review on the forum.

Sound off if you can and let me know your take. I know it ain't a Kershaw, Spyderco, etc. Just curious. Thanks in advance for any feedback friends!

not all gerbers are the same... i have three that are great
This one Hinderer Rescue
Folding Freeman
and a mini fast draw
heres mine:D its a tank of a folder very large:eek: Excellent FF and it looks pretty cool, the CLS looks very similar cept with a combo blade rather than the blunt, serrated mine has
good luck

Thanks man. Nice pics btw. I am looking at the black one. You are right, it is a big folder in size.

Anyone else??

I've stared at it here and at the sports stores. I have no problems with the way Hinderer designed it, or the cost cutting methods used by Gerber to mass produce it. I believe it would be very effective in it's role.

I just don't need it. Despite the volume of catcalling I expect saying this, the average Joe will find it a waste of funds to buy one and velcro it to the headliner. Most accidents aren't bad enough to need it, and those that are will leave the occupants with little ability or consciousness to use it. It's better off left in the hands of a First Responder, LEO, or paramedic. It would be a bit of a convenience for a off roader or rally driver - some plan on courting the risk of getting upside down. Joe Suburban in his commuter SUV has no real need.

A driver's singular duty is to avoid the accident, not embrace the aftermath. If your passengers are particulary encouraged by your driving style to want one, maybe you should rethink the methods used and the impending increase in cost risky driving guarantees.

If your job says it would be helpful to someone beyond carrying a pocketknife, go ahead.

My Southern homeboy...chill man!

I was looking at the black one which has a normal blade with some serrations. I was just looking for something semi big in hand and semi tactical to add to the collection and clip to my tac pants at my next IDPA match man. I am not a crazy driving redneck nor EMT wanna be. The belt cutter is a kinda cool accent though.

I thought it was a pretty cool blade and was looking for feedback from anyone that owned one. No biggie.

I will prob go with the SOG Aegis as it is the same blade size and pretty cool. Plus it is AO.

Alot of what i see here (on BF) and myself own (this being one of them) is more than i need or outside the realm of practicality... My point is it shouldnt necessarily be a deal breaker... What sets us apart form all the squares is we are nutty collectors and knife users:D
You like the knife, the aesthetic, the design, the color, the weird tools whatever, doesnt matter buy it try it out.:D
Not really pushing Gerber, lord knows they make some crap but alot of the bashing is rather blind and indiscriminate...
What ever ya decide post some pictures:thumbup:

Well said bubba. Thanks! Agree. Just clicked the purchase button on a new SOG Aegis today so the Gerber Hinderer s now on the list of potential buys...but not right now. I don't have a beef with Gerbers. That said..some of the feedback on the forum has educated me toward the differences present at similar cost points.

I think I wanna add the Flash 2 and Trident to the triad of SOG's I want to own...then time to move on to Spyderco or other brands.

Sounds like you should just skip the gerber for something youre 100% on.

We have a lot of subsections for knife makers. I will warn you though, once you get one nice knife you somehow end up 10 of them.

The Hinderer rescue and CLS are fantastic knifes for the price. They are solidly built, full steel liners, a oversized thumbstud that also acts as a secondary stop pin. Your not going to break it with average use. As for the design, you've got three very useful emergency "extras" in the window break, seat belt cutter and O2 key. Instead of a traditional locking liner, the liner lock is released by pulling back on a button on the handle, making it easier if your hands are covered in fluids. All this plus the price too me makes the perfect entry level first responder knife.

One of the local police departments here has even gone so far as to issue the CLS version to all their members.

Honestly can't recommend having this, especially in your car, enough. If not this I'd say at least get a ResQMe or Benchmade Houdini rescue tool. (both make great stocking stuffers). If you live near water it could really help if you happen to go in the drink with your car. But hell might as well get a kinfe out of it too.

Now that you have explained your actual purpose, it makes sense.

Now that is reading between the lines!

I would wear the knife on the person, not fix it to a sun visor where it could get knocked off at impact!

Make it ambidex' accessible, as, if one of your arms becomes injured or trapped, best be that you can access your rescue tool with the arm which works!

Think through the scenario in which you may have to use the tool, from the driver's perspective.
