My girlfriend works at a archery shop and somewhere the owner came up with a big box of Gerber hunting knives. The knives are not packaged, and have no sheath, just a cardboard sleeve. They are fixed blade and marked S30V and USA. I did a Google search and it is identical to the Freeman Stag Gut Hook, but it has a plastic (I think) scales, and a blued blade. She brought me one home cause she knows I love knives and she got it for $12! They are selling them for only $18 in the store. Anybody have any idea what these are? Sorry, I can't post pics.

A Gerber with a blued S30V blade? I've never heard of it, but you could try their site and search through all fixed blade products.

Gerber makes knives with s30v steel?

The Gerber Freeman in S30V with a black blade (tungsten carbide coating) is a discontinued knife that was exclusive to Cabelas. Does it look like the one here? If the knives are genuine, the handles are, in fact, cocobolo and you have a discovered a very undervalued cache.

Yes, Gerber makes and has made knives in S30V.

I know hating on Gerber is a popular pastime here on BladeForums, but a knife enthusiast should at least keep up with what one of the largest knife manufacturers in the world does, if only to keep his disgust fresh and well-informed.

Thanks for the list but, dude? I have no problem with any of the Gerbers I own. Slow your roll. ;)

Yep! That Cabela's one is it! These ones just have really really dark handles, but I looked, and they are in fact wood.

Congrats on the find or, perhaps more accurately, congrats on having a girlfriend with a keen eye who knows your interests well.

Thanks. Not much of a fan of the knife, I use my Pirantah for most of my hunting needs, but it will go in the collection. I might send it off to get a nice leather sheath made, so it is "complete".

How many came in the box?

Cabela's also carried an exclusive S30V Gator fixed blade, and the recently discontinued Yari II and current Decree are made with S30V as well. The CFB and Edict are 154CM.

IMO, Gerber makes some good knives that are unfortunately ignored completely thanks to the absolute junk being produced overseas from lesser materials with little or no regard to QC. I was fortunate to score a couple of Yari IIs and an S30V Gator on clearance for roughly half the going rate, and although I haven't put them through their paces (no more so than most of my other fixed blades) the out-of-the-box build quality is as good as any comparable Benchmade or ZT I own.

I've always felt the Gator line, new and old, have been of good quality as far as Gerbers go.

They have a whole shopping hand basket full of them, just loose with the cardboard sleeves. She said she thinks the owner of the store bought the whole lot of them for like $100. If it didn't have that gut hook, I'd buy a bunch of them! They are taking them to the Sportsman shows and selling them for $18, they are going fast!

Yeah I'm not a guthook guy either, but good find!

Sorry. :o Questions like that about Gerber seem to be done more often in snark than in earnest around here. You know, because Gerber doesn't name their steels and the only knives they sell are marked "BG". I forgot that you aren't one of bandwagon Gerber haters.

No worries man.

I try never to write off anything completely even if they're mostly not my taste... you never know if you'll miss a hidden gem.

I think the Gator line has been very serviceable, and the two EZ-Outs I've owned were decent as well. I've had my share of bad experiences with them but I haven't bought anything from their more recent lineups the past few years... there could be some good stuff out there.

Part of my first paycheck ever went to a Gerber.
