gerber instant Vs. outrigger

I have a gerber instant and I'm very happy with it. I think it's a great edc knife and an amazing design but on the same note I like the style of the outrigger. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with both and if the outrigger stands up to the instant. I don't want to spend 40 bucks on one of many crap knives released by gerber because as we all know gerber basically has two areas which they excel in. Putting out great knives that don't empty your wallet and putting out total crap.

Any help is appreciated

What steel are those? I'm thinking there are many, many alternatives that honestly could do a better job with a better warranty. I've just had too many Gerbers to see anything but failure there.

The Spyderco Tenacious, Resilience, Persistence etc ie Taiwan line.

The Benchmade Lonewolf and HK lines.

Pretty much any Kershaw.

The Ontario RAT1.

Heck, even anything from Cold Steel would be more reliable and perform better than Gerber.

The sad truth is that Gerber is not as good as it was 15+ years ago. Dont buy into the hype and content yourself with a lesser knife without giving something better in the same price range a shot. I apologize if my comments are not welcome, just not a fan of Gerber and would like to expand your options.

I'm thinking they are both 7cr17mov from my experience with the instant. It loses its edge fairly quickly. I use it a lot at work and by the end of the day I always need to sharpen to get it back to razor sharp but it's not dull by any means

And I'm more than open to suggestions man, I'm really looking for an assisted opening with a drop point that would make a good edc.

I added some suggestions in my other post. Personally I prefer the Spyderco's because the hole is actually faster with less breakable parts. Benchmade Axis locks are scary fast once you get the hang of them. Kershaw has MANY assisted knives in a variety of steels. I'd check out the Blur. I used the crap out of mine and it never let me down, was fast as heck.

If you look up kershawguy on google, you will find that his website offers new knives at cheaper prices and also blems (factory seconds) at extremely reduced prices. Good hunting!

Also, in my experience, the best bang for your buck steels are ones like 154cm, vg-10, s30v, and d2. All hold an edge for days without needing to be touched up or sharpened.

Thanks man I'll look at your suggestions. Particularly into kershaw because of the availability since their sold at Walmart right next to the Gerbers. Honestly I hope I don't sound ungrateful but. I just can't stand the look of spyderco knives or the kershaw blur. Don't get me wrong I'm sure their great knives I just think their a little bit on the ugly side and I want something I like to look at too you know?

However as stated I am going to look into kershaw. I love gerber but I do think I should look into some others. I've given several a chance but none have lived up to my expectations.

Let me say though that you really should give the instant a chance it's 40 bucks and you can always return it but I almost guarantee you won't. I love the thing. It's legitimately my favorite knife I've ever owned I'm just looking for a good second knife

First of all thanks for your help man I appreciate it. I had kinda given up hope on getting any advice. And second of all I think I'm gonna go with the kershaw funxion diy. It's a cheaper steel but I'm not looking to spend over 50. On the other hand it combines multiple tools with assisted opening. Plus it is freaking sexy

Edit: gonna go with the emt version

Hope you enjoy it man. I have no experience with that knife but I am down with the steel. I would compare it to AUS8, both easily get hair popping sharp, and last a good while before resharpening. I have an all black Zing in that steel.

You say that as if Cold Steel wouldn't be the most reliable and high-value option out of those listed, especially in OP's price range.

I think you will like Kershaw. I'm glad to hear you like the Instant also. It's my next purchase
