Gerber Instant

Experience with Gerber instant??

There are hundreds of much better blades for the money. Check out some of these:

Kershaw/Emerson CQC-6K
Kershaw Cryo G-10
Ontario Rat Model 1
Ontario Utilitac II
ESEE Zancudo
Buck Vantage Select Large
CRKT M21-02G

Last I heard on the Gerber Instant there was a recall on them due to laceration hazards with the button lock... and a lot of cases of opening in the pants. Maybe they've corrected it by now.

I agree with the post above. Plenty of better blades out there for the money. IMO Gerber isn't what they were at one time. I think once you start studying the market for comparably priced folders the Gerber may become a distant memory.

Not sure where the Gerber knife is priced but there are some good starter suggestions above, especially the RAT's and Utilitac.

I have had my instant for a few months now. I got it as a gift.
Never has opened in pocket. Only real production problem with mine is that the leaf spring that powers the blade out has some machining grooves on the end that touches the blade. This makes the initial push on the thumbs stud quite stiff, but once beyond that, the blade deploys very fast and solid. This make it hard to open, but I have gotten used to it. I have come to accept it now as almost a safety feature, as it like a very heavy trigger pull on a firearm.
It is comfortable to use and seems to stay sharp even with a lot of use. I used it quite hard in the garden last weekend and it survived. Resharpened easily with diamond stone in just a few swipes.
Overall acceptable.
The couple annoying things that stick out are the non movable clip, and price. Although I got it for free, I would have probably been upset if I had shelled out 37 bucks.
There are just too many other better knives out there for that amount of cash. I will continue to use it as my working in the yard at home pocket knife and I'm pretty sure it'll do fine, but again, I can get a rat1 for less $$$$ and the rat is a better knife.
