Got a nice sized gift certificate for Target and i saw the Gerber knives there.

Whats the hap's with Gerber Knives these days?

The AF style Combat, Covert, and Mini- Covert are all good knives for the $$. I have one of each, and so far have had zero problems out of any !! Also have LST, Gator, Gatormate, Guardian Backup, River Shorty, all good users!! Got some other Gerbers, but they are the higher end , Paul folder, BMF bowie, etc. I like all of my Gerbers, Good bang for the buck!! Good luck! Marty.

hmmm. The Gerber website doesn't say which knives are imported, or from where. Most of mine are "USA," except for the Silver Knights that are made in Japan. It's been a while since I've inspected the new Gerbers on display.

I've abused the heck out of a LST as a beater and its still good. Holds a decent edge, and is made in U.S.A.

Gerber makes alot of it's stuff in China. Targets lines is mostly China made. That said, My wife wanted a Mini Paraframe she saw a Wallys. She really likes it. Now she also has an EZout JR, from Oshmans. she likes the way they carry better than the similar sized Bucks she has.

I gave my dad a Gerber that I used as a beater as he has no real passion for knives, but needed one at work where he cuts packaging all day. I gave him an old Bolt lock Gerber. It was pretty sharp but nothing outstanding, six months later he said he hasnt had the need to sharpen it and he says he uses it every single day, more than once.

I don't know if this is because its one of the older Gerbers (around 95-97) or they are still the same today, but for what it cost, it seems to be holding up fine.

I was ready to upgrade him to a Griptilian, but I am having second thoughs now, which is a pain in the rump as he is really hard to buy for ;)

The Gerber Bolt Action has a thin flat ground blade. It's hard to make a better slicer than that. If he likes the Bolt Action, he probably will like the Griptilian, and the Griptilian edge will hold up as well.

Temper, with all respect, if your father likes the Bolt action Gerber. GREAT!! buy your self the Griptillian.

I must be getting old, I bought my Gerber Mk II in '78 and it wasn't stainless. That is the only Gerber I've owned that holds a great edge. The Mk I and Guardian were okay, but they didn't come close to that old Mk II.

I meant before Fiskars bought them out.

Since he likes the Gerber I am going to give him a DMT Mini sharpener and a Pelican M6 Lithium instead.

I've got a bunch of Benchmades and Spides but alas they are for sale :grumpy:

Its nice to get stock in, handle it once and then sell it though, its like the exchange forum on steroids lol.
