Hi,

I am curious about Gerber Kitchen knives. I have the Miming knives and 4 have the sword ebgraved on the handle and 4 have an S with a circle around it. Does anyone know what they mean? I assume one set is older than the other.

Is there a website to read up on the history of this company? Are they still in business producing knives?
Thanks so much for any info!

I don't have any info on your kitchen knives specifically. Gerber, however, does still produce knives. The company is owned by Fiskars currently. Most who are familiar with the older Gerbers seem to think that they were better than those produced since the Fiskars takeover. You could check the Gerber and Fiskars sites to see if they have any historical information. Sorry I could not be more helpful.

I have 2 six inch utility-type kitchen knives from Gerber, they look kinda like small chefs knives. I've gotten alot of use out of them and they are a quality knife for kitchen chores. I paid 8$ apiece for them on a SMKW closeout sale and can't complain. I'd take a look there for some sale items, they usually have some good kitchen stuff on sale.

Generally the Sword stamp on a Gerber aluminum handle means that the blade is plated tool steel; the edges will rust if not cared for! The "S in circle" stamp means a stainless blade. However, some handles are unmarked, and can have both stainless and tool steel blades! Confusing? Yes! After looking at several hundred Gerbers over the last thirty years I've gotten where I can tell the difference just by the blade finish and edge.

PS. Stainless blades are generally later production (with exceptions: filet and dive models)
