Gerber LHR, 420 SS any good?

I read that this steel was chosen because it will bend rather than break. I am kind of skeptical, does this steel belong on a $100 knife?

Hi,

From my point of view, not on a $100 knife. There are better steels to use in that price range. And I kind of think they chose it because it's a cheaper stainless to buy and use. Rather than a better stainless like S30V or even 440C.

That is not to say that 420 or 420HC don't have a use as a knife blade. They do. Just not on that style of hard use fixed blade.

If it's the same stuff Gerber uses on the new Mk. IIs, it's pretty awful stuff, tbqh. I spoze it would work fine in a dagger like that, something intended to be used as a weapon first and a tool second, but there are all kinds of better steels out there.

So it's a poor quality steel for a knife blade. Any idea on the toughness compared to 440c or ats-34? I just want to know if Gerber made their steel selection on properties other than price.

According to the Steel FAQ 420HC is comparable to 440A.

I would think it is tougher than 440C and ATS-34 since it is softer.

Some companies laminate with 420 with a good steel in the middle because it's soft and will add durability, but lower end companies use it for price. If you're looking for durability, go with a carbon steel blade like 1095 or 5160. It'll be more durable and hold a better edge, and there are plenty of them like that Gerber for $100 or less. Check out knives by ESEE and TOPS, for example.

The 420 hc steel used seems to be a reasonable fit for it's intended role. Looks like a good deal for $50 bucks, the only problem is that Gerber wants over a hundred dollars for this knife. I hope to see some reviews soon, as I am looking forward to purchasing the knife if the reviews are favorable.

I bought a Gerber LHR and IMO it is worth the US$99 as a system - i.e. sheath and knife. Keep in mind that a good kydex sheath will cost over US$50 and this sheath with its anti-snatch system is worth more than US$50. From sharpening and simple cutting tests on cardboard, the 420HC on the LHR is nowhere near as good as the 420HC used in the Buck-Strider ML knives which have a BOS HT.

Hi Falcor, I just want Gerber to do right by us. And I also like the shape of the point and lower guard.
