I have been interested in the Gerber LMF since I first saw it in person, but I never much cared for the "tacticool" sheath. Then, when I was searching the web for knife deals I came across it without the sheath.

I figure I could make a nice conventional sheath out of leather and save a few dollars to boot. Do you feel that the knife sans sheath is worth the 40.00 asking price?

Thanks, Gary

thats a good price on that blade, I dont have any experience with it, but have heard no complaints from a few people that I know that own it and use it, I would buy it and have someone make you a kydex Sheath for it, Leather is nice but if its going to be a outside/multi utility blade then I would highly recommed kydex over leather for many reasons also make sure the kydex sheath has a hole in bottom for drainage, my main complaint against leather sheaths for a survival blade is yes they do look better than a kydex but can trap moisture when exposed to outside environment and is more apt for corrosion vs a kydex sheath.. this is just IMO of course...

I've never been a big fan of partially serrated blades, and more importantly I don't know what blade steel Gerber is using these days in the LMF II. (I know that
they've switched to 420HC in the Prodigy, which is the smaller version of the LMF II.)

I think I'd look elsewhere, maybe at a Benchmade Rant Bowie, a Becker BK2 Campanion, or one of the knives from Buck.

I understand that there are definitely better blades out there, I was just curious if there is anything comparable or better at that price point.

Thanks, Gary

FordFun if this is the blade your wanting to buy dont let anyone scare you away from it, are there better blades out there? Sure there are, but for 40 bucks you wont find many that are much better at that price point, and are not loosing much, my first real folder was actually a Old Gerber and it was a good blade, with that said its your money, buy the blade that makes you happy....

If you've seen one and like it, buy it for $40. I have one with the bulky sheath. The sharpener that's built in the sheath actually works pretty good, but like you, I bought a "lighter" nylon sheath for smoother carry. The blade is thick and the knife is heavy. I thought I might get some hunting utility out of it, but it's too big for that, so I keep it in the truck as an emergency backup knife while in the woods. It will serve its purpose, especially for the price. Foliage green usually costs more, too, so that seems like an good price.

Thanks for all of the input. I went ahead and ordered this knife and will work on a nice sheath when it arrives. I've read mostly positive reviews about it, and I think that for the money, it will be hard to find another American made knife in its category. I've looked at the Kabars. but they just dont interest me as much.

Thanks, Gary

Give us your impressions after you've used it hard few times, how it fares. I am pretty interested of that knife. $40 is not bad IMHO.
