Hi,

What is (or was) the quality level of the Gerber BMF and LMF? Are there some to be found somewhere at reasonable prices, or do they fetch a premium on eBay?

Thanks,

JD

Joss,
Just do a search on Ebay and be sure to check the button to include closed auctions. It will only go back 30days I believe.

Robert,

Yeah, I know. I'm more interested on feedback on this specific knife. Your bowie is too pretty to be taken out...

for shame! :(

I know a lot of people just collect knives these days, and really never have any intentions of using them, but I could never see myself doing that. Sure, there are knives that I have that I've never taken out in the field, but those are very few indeed. Keep in mind, these are also production knives, some of which are no longer made.

As for any customs that I have, or have had, I have taken them all out to be used. I guess I'm just of that mentality that if you own a sweet corvette, it should be driven! Just my opinion though. :p

I used to own a Gerber BMF, that I traded to another member of the forums here. I had it for a good many years, and I was very impressed with the fit, feel, and finish of the knife. I will advise you against getting one with sawteeth, as they're pretty much useless.

You can find them on Ebay somewhat regularly, and the prices aren't too bad actually, especially when you compare them to what the knife was worth new. Also, put out the word on the trade forums that you're looking for one. You'd be surprised how many hard to find items have a way of finding you that way.

Good luck on your search!

_ender,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try to find one. Robert Hankins' bowie has a damascus blade, a highly polished ironwood handle, and handrubbed & mirror polished fittings. It would be pretty stupid to take it out, as a lot of its value lies in the quality and fragility of the finish. I have a 'user's' bowie on order from a maker I respect tremendously, but I'm not going to have it for a while.

So, if anyone is trying to sell their's, I'm in the market for a Gerber BMF without sawtooth.
