i'm looking foward to buying a new knife to take along camping this summer, and anytime im outdoors. i want something that is very versatile, strong and reliable. this knife from gerber seems like a really good choice at what i think is a very reasonable price. however, i don't know much about knives. i'm only 17. i absolutely love the outdoors, camping hunting and fishing, and do so every chance i get. sadly, i don't live the outdoorsmen lifestyle i would like, so i don't have much knowledge when it comes to this stuff. i was wondering if you guys could take a look at this knife and tell me whatchya think.

p.s. i'm new to this site, so let me know if i'm doing something wrong in my post. thanks.

I have one of these (along with many other similiar knives). I feel that the handle doesn't lend itself to close work with this knife...it feels kind of akward in the hand. Sheath is top notch. Blade steel is utilitarian. For your described use, I would recommend in no particular order: Fallkniven F1, H1, or S1, Ontario TAK, Rat-3, Benchmade fixed Griptillian, Entrek Badger or havalina, Becker BK-2 Companion, BRK&T gameskeeper, Cold Steel SRK, Grohman Survival knife. I have and enjoy all of these. My standard carry when in the woods as far as fixed blades go is The Fallkniven A1 and either the F1 or H1 depending on which of the last two I grab that day. Hope I didn't confuse things worse for you.

sorry it took so long to reply. i was away campin the past few days. i think i'll take ur advice, and trust that what u say about the gerber lmf is true. about it not sitting in the hand well. but i really like the desgin of it. what do you think about ontario's version. the ontario ASEK. something about the forat of these 2 knives really appeals to me. the ontario ASEK is 3/4 inches shorter then the gerber one. whats ur opinion of thought of that one instead? thansk for the help

Ricky, I don't own one, nor do I have any personal experience with the Ontario ASEK. That being said, just looking at it, I don't like the cross guard for most work....it precludes a thumb forward grip which adversely effects control in cutting. I also noticed that it's blade is only hardened to RC 50-54. That is very soft for a knife...I would expect to experience a lack of edge retention in a knife with that hardness. I would reiterate my earlier recommendations.

I have an LMF infantry version (black) it sits fine in my hand, the sheath can be strapped on just about anywhere also, though the thumb forward grip is not possible as the gentleman above states, for that price range you can totally destroy the ASEK (well im still trying to and it hasnt broken yet.) and not feel to bad about it, if i used a falkniven for the same tasks id feel bad. lol. id say go with the LMF.
