First a couple caveats:
1. It definately seems many if not most prefer custom blades in this forum
2. Maybe this blade has been discussed already. In which case, please give me a link and we can end this thread.

So, I was wondering if any have experience with this knife? Is it any good for a mass produced survival type knife? It clearly is not the most expensive. Anything better in its "class" at its price range? If you have any experience with this blade, what are the weak points and strengths in your opinion?

Thanks,

Lskylizard,
Glad you found what you were looking for. I just dropped you a reply to your request for an update in the thread over in the general forum. I'd personally recommend the infantry model unless you really need the line/belt cutter, but that's all I'll add here. Good luck with your decision.

Lskylizard,

This class of knife is designed with cutting wreckage in mind as that is the first priority if you are in wreckage. As a wilderness survival knife you could do better if downed aircraft aren't part of your problem.

I am a confirmed non-custom knife user. I don't knock anyone who wants to buy or use custom knives. In fact if I had the cash I'd have all sorts of stuff. There are production knives available to meet just about any scenario you would like to describe and the collected personages here have probably used them all at some point.

There are alot of custom knives bought and sold just as collectors and they stay in safes. Why risk a $350 to $500 knife in the bush when a $75 - $150 knife is plenty to get the job done and in style.

What do you want the knife to do for you? Mac

I am looking for something with a blade in this size range to strap on when I Ruc into the woods for a couple days to a maybe 7-10 days. A basic all around knife to use in conjunction with my Leatherman multi-tool & twin blade SAK.

LSkylizard,

I'm sure you'll get lots of recommendations for this class of knife. Two knives you might want to look at are the Falkniven F1 (around $100) and the Mora 2000 (much less expensive). I'll let people who own and use them comment, but both get high marks. These are two on my list of knives to buy when I get some cash.

For about $10 you can get any of several Frost's Mora knives. I use the green handled "Swedish Army Knife" (SWAK) and like them very much. For $10 they are a no brainer. You will actually use them more than you think, they cut great. One of these in a kydex sheath won't set you back too much.

My personal choice is the Becker BK-7. I have a survival kit based on this knife and sheath. I carry that with a small neck knife. My brother carries the BK-10 Crewman and likes it very much. Mac

You might also want to look at the Al Mar SERE Operator. Less of a chopper but it does have a blade in that size range, and makes a great cutter. Also have the option of sawteeth if that's something you might want. The ones on that knife are actually fairly effective at straight cuts, but like most knives are better used for notching. Maybe an Entrek Javelina. I think the Javalina can be had for about the same price as the Gerber if you shop around a little, and these are TOUGH knives IMO. I only have one, the Elk, but have handled several other models and plan on buying several more in the future. You might also consider the BM Nimravus or the new Blackwater Gear combat fixed blade, which is basically the Nimravus with sawback style serrations on the upper edge. That's definately on my short list for the near future.

Scroll about halfway down for the SERE Operator models

Blackwater Gear. I think you can find them cheaper if you shop around a bit.

Hey, what is the difference other then that cutter? I seem to find the infantry model listed at the same price as the one with the belt cutter thing.

For the price I think I would go ahead and get the ASEK model. The cutter just looks like an extra tool for free. I would probably never use it but who knows couldnt hurt to have it. If they would only produce it in a straight edge version. I e-mailed Gerber about it and they replied but nothing definite.

Lskylizard, no difference as far as I know other than coming with the line cutter. I guess JTC is right, it's an extra doohickey for no extra cost, but I just didn't find it as useful as I thought I might.

Ok, that clears it up. I just wasn't sure. Thanks.
