I am planning to buy a Gerber LMF II knife and I had a question about the intergrated sharpener. Do you just run the whole blade thru the sharpener or only the plain part of the blade? I'm not a nthe Gerberewbie, but I am not used to the Gerber sharpener. Thanks for the help.

I was saying I am not a newbie, but not accustomed to the intergrated sharpener. My computer must have gremlins.

There was a review of this knife in Oct '08 Knife Illustrated. They didn't actually explain how to use the sharpener but it would appear that you can do the whole blade with it. That being said, I wouldn't buy a knife just because it had an integrated sharpener on the sheath - you can get something like an Accusharp that does a better job faster. While KI didn't damn the Gerber, it didn't impress the reviewers that much either and it wouldn't be a knife I'd waste my money on

Thanks for the info guys. I am not wanting a LMF II just because of the sharpener, but because I've wanted 1 for a long time.

Got the GERBER LMFII, tried the integrated sharpener. First of all, yep it works pretty well for putting back a cutting edge (Gross edge not Razor Sharp to be clear). It works only with the plain edge as the serrated part is chisel grind (one side only has an angle). I thought sure it would put an edge back at the serrations, it does for the big ones, but after many times of doing the sharpening with the integrated sharpener I noticed that I put a nick on one of the teeth because each time the plain edge ended, the sharpening stones jumped on the tooth. It might be wise to use another sharpening device than this one, but as a survival knife I know that I can still use the integrated sharpener to put an edge back if I have nothing else in hand. That been said, keep your knives sharp all the time.

I Love this blade, its very well in hand, good balance, great overall, takes the abuse.
