There doesn't seem to be records for the Mark I like there is for the II, but if they used the same serial number format at the same time, then I would estimate 1988-89. I have one that starts with S and I bought it brand new around 1994.it was given to me by my grandfather. it's a gerber mark 1 with a serial number h1153s. looking for the year of manufacture.
that you so much friend.I hate to tell you this, but Gerber only has serial number records on the Mark 2. I was in contact with them for some time on another project and, by "reading between the lines", I came to realize that much was lost [thrown out?] when Fiskars bought Gerber.
Perhaps the best you can do is consult the Mark 2 records and find the serial number series that most closely resembles the one on your grandather's knife. They were more-or-less contemporaries. A good place to begin is with John Sabol's excellent work, here: https://www.militarycarryknives.com/MKMAIN/MkMain.htm
Also pay close attention to the specific type of Gerber logo on your grandfather's knife. They changed them from time to time, and Sabol's work documents that as well.
NP, and good luck.that you so much friend.
Oh, they're still around, and available. They're a bit pricey though.I looked briefly for one of these and gave up after I realized I suck and I don't get to have one. About 25 years too late I suppose
