I would like to know thoughts and opinions of this knife. I have a chance to buy one for $70.00. Thankyou.

It's a classic Vietnam - era military knife, with the sole purpose of killing human beings. Probably the best embodiment of the Fairbairn - Sykes idea.

The very design of the blade prevents it from being used as a utility knife, unlike the USMC Ka - Bar (another classic).

I keep one purely as a toy (I don't use it for anything).

Memorable for its appearance in "Aliens."

who had it in aliens? when they played that hand on table knife game?

I think they go used for higher, but am not sure...

Yup, the knife game. Used by Lance Henriksen to "do the thing with the knife".

Originals with the textured "Cat's Tongue" handle and bent blades have gone as high as $1,500 on eBay, if I recall correctly. I wanted one for historical purposes, but decided that I was too poor for it.

Later models have had serrations added onto the side to market it as a "Utility Knife," but the design simply speaks against it.

It's not a good knife to have unless you're into collecting. It's double - edged, has a really long and narrow blade, and was designed from the get - go as a weapon of assassination. You can't carry it anywhere, can't really use it for much.

It is, however, a legend in its own right - right up there with the 110s, Ka - Bars, and various Bowies (unlike all these Dork Ops Tacticool pieces of junk we see nowadays).

Thankyou for the replies. I went ahead and got it for $70 NIB out the door. I also found a site devoted to the Mark 2. Interesting.

Just out of interest where did you get yours from? I heard that the new ones are being made in China, is it true?

I believe the current series is made in USA but cost almost US$200 here. Still, if it weren't for the serrations I'd consider getting one simply because it is a classic.

Note sure where "here" is for you, but the currently USA manufactured Mk II has an MSRP of around $150US but with minimal shopping around can routinly be found for $80US (or less) from on-line retailers. Of course Vietnam era Mk II knives are quite collectable and often go for hundreds and hundreds of dollars.

The Mark 2 I purchased was at a gun shop that is having hard times I guess. The blade is marked on one side Gerber 420HC USA. Other side is the serial #.
