i ve had the urge to own a fighting dagger knife of this type, and ive been seeing them going on ebay for between 200-300.any one have an opinion on them?are they worth the money?i have also seen a similar knife called a roton for just under 200. would this be a better option?

You have to remember that about all either of those knives are good for are stabbing someone and if you can find a genuine Gerber Mk II for $200 grab it.

Collector Gerbers are nice, I've had three of the Mark II's and still have a Mark I. Functionally they cut - but don't offer the utility for general use like a good folder or camp knife, because of the steep grind angle and lack of belly. They are just a stabbing sentry dispatcher, which never really happens in combat.

Certainly not legal carry in many jurisdictions. I'm sure they will continue to appreciate, so are probably a good investment, as there will always be someone who thinks they are a really cool commando dagger like I did. But not really useful, which I now insist on in my bladeware.

Of course, I've seen the retro daggers at BudK for less than $15, and for show, they look worth the money. Sheath included, too. Might even pick one up for Renaissance or a letter opener, which the Gerber did well at, too.

when i bought my guardian it cost about $40 and was worth that, barely. No way is it worth $200 unless you're hoping to sell it in the future for a profit. it's just not a very useful design in my opinion. if you want a fighting dagger look around there are some pretty good knives for a lot less money. the kershaw military boot knife, crkt sting, i'm sure there are others that would let you scratch that itch without the high cost.

I own a mark II, I and Guardian II by Bob Loveless. The mark II has more of an oval handle and would not be good if your going to work with it for a long period of time, and the Guardian has a more of a flat handle and would feel better in your hand for use over a longer period of time. The old Gerbers are awesome and you should go with whatever Gerber better fits your needs.

I forget is the Mark II the 6 3/4" blade and the Mark I the shorter blade?

the mark 11 is the big one, the mk 1 is shorter (~4") and the guardian is shortest (~3").

all are good knives though i wouldnt pay $200 or more for any of them,

imho the gebers are a better investment than the rotons,

Thanks. I thought I had it right.

I have all 3. I have never used them but they look neat.
