I was just curious as to the strength of these knives, sharpness, and the quality of the later versions made by Gerber before they were discontinued. I always thought they looked kind of fragile, considering their role as "combat" knives. Still, I regret not getting one when I had the chance. Does anyone have any info regarding these knives?

Interesting questions. Thanks for asking them - I want to know too.

Chris,

We have a few of these, some old, some new. The quality seems to be about the same, and I actually like the newer ones better.

We're going to do a collection of these some day, after finishing our other collections first.

They really aren't that fragile, it's a lot heavier and more solidly built than it looks.

The only real faults that I see are that it's a rather specialized knife, and in this world of compromise where everyone seems to be looking for the "Do everything" knife, it doesn't seem to fit in well.

Also, the sectional width of the handle is rather narrow, and isn't indexed well. I imagine the thumb would "find" the hilt for orientation, and it is double edged, but I'd be afraid that it would roll if I attempted to kill someone with it.

Ok, so that wasn't real PC, but that's what it was designed for...nothing more, nothing less...so from that standpoint, there are better choices...."Chute" knives come to mind... ;)

They are strong and well designed and solidly constructed for their intended purpose -- stabbing. They do that very well. I carried one daily about thirty years ago, still own it, and have gathered two more of slightly different configuration the past ten years. If you need something to chop with, or do some fine slicing, you'll need another knife. If we had another massive war and the government called me back to active duty (which wouldn't happen, I assure you, until after they had already drafted every man, boy, grandmother, and trainable dog in the nation), I would grab my Mark II.

believe me when i say they are anything but delicate - i have had mine since '69 and used to throw it and abuse the hell out of it - the sheath is getting ragged but the knife, not counting a few minor dings, is as good as the it was when it left thre factory in '68. and no dings in the blade just the handle - the knife has held up very well thru the years, and , w/a lot of work i finally got it razor sharp, both edges ....

Hey guys,

Thanks yet again for answers to my questions. I always loved the way these knives looked, but like I said before, always thought they were fragile. I've had the urge to own one for over a year now, not for killing or everyday use, but just to have one. Thanks again for the information, I appreciate it.

Chris
