I have a friend who wants to sell his Gerber Mark II (yes I have tried to talk him out of it!). Can anyone help me out of its age or year of manufacture and an approx. $ value?

It has the silver blade with serrations and the serial # is 0876557
The sheath is black leather and also has a number on it, 97223, but he told me he originally got the knife without a sheath and this one is a replacement.

The blade is in great condition, this knife was never really carried or used, but was kept ina drawer at home. From what little I have read about these models I can say that the blade tip is still intact. And although I doubt it is the case, I cannot tell if this has a 5 degree angle to the blade. I doubt this one has it since it seems that earlier black bladed models had the angle, but I wouldn't know what to look for even if it was.

Thanks and will appreciate any info. ( wil try to get around to posting a pic of it today, am thinking of getting it for myself )

The early Mark II's didn't have serrations. The serial number seems wrong for a Mk II. Where are the serrations on the blade, near the point or near the handle. Is the blade double-edged along the full length? What color and texture is the handle?

That number is outside the range of the table that used to be on the Gerber site (I printed it out).

Sounds like a very late model that was still made from L6 steel....like shortly after 1980 or so.

In my opinion, much better than the 440 models that were made later with were denoted with an "S" in the serial number.

The number on the sheath is the zip code to the city of mfg at Gerber I believe.

Good knife and in mint shape usually around $200 or more.

The serrations are near the handle. The grip is black and "tacky". Now my friend wants me to try and sell it for him, but part of me doesn't want to part with it.

It still seems like your serial number has one too many digits in it. If you lost one of the lower digits the knife could be 1980 vintage. In that case the blade should not be narrow near the handle. It would be made from 440C stainless steel. If the blade waist is a little bit narrower near the handle than near the point it could be a 1979 version with an L6 alloy nonstainless blade.

Gerberguy had a listing of Gerber dagger models and serial numbers. Gerberguy's website is no longer functioning, but here is a link to a Google archived copy of how it used to look:

My bad, ser# = 087655. Looks like 1980 production.
I really appreciate the help.
Right now I'm digging around to see what I have to trade that he may take for it.
