Hello, I am not a big fan of Gerber, but in May 2012 they sold a Maximus and I really want to get one.
Most websites still have them listed but say "On Back Order" or "Out of Stock".

Did anyone get one?

I had never heard of it so I watched a quick video on it....

looks cheepy and toyish to me. less than stellar steel too.

I don't have one. But i do have some Gerber products. I like them a LOT, for what they are & what they cost me. Gerbers are NOT what i would call a hard use knife, not even close. That being said, i still love the ones i have, but i also use them with what i just said in mind. I have a 1981/2 Gerber Mark II. IMHO, it is only good for one thing & that is dispatching the enemy, whoever that may be. I also have a Gerber Freeman folder, love it. I also have a Gerber Metolius fixed blade, love it. Gerber Artifact, love it. Gerber skeletonized folders, hate them---mine SUCK, wont keep an edge at all & i am pretty good at sharpening blades. As long as you choose carefully, use them within their ability, your blades should work well for you. I do not throw my knives

I have so many hard use blades, that it don't even matter to me anymore that my Gerbers are not hard use blades. I pack for what i think i will need, or just throw the bins in the truck or camper & take em all. If i ever do break one, it will suck to be sure. I pride myself in being able to pick good blades. I would not pick the Maximus, but thats just me. If you like it, get one. It is not a hard use blade though. For those, look to BK&T, Ka-Bar, Ontario, Condor, Tops, etc, etc....

From Gerber today: 7/25/12

In an effort to cover all of our bases – specifically that of safety – we’ve postponed this project indefinitely. We want to ensure the safe use and functionality of our products, and we weren’t ready to move the Maximus to market. There is an outside chance that – after another re-design – this product may come to market, but I would not hold your breath on it.

i'm missing the draw of this knife? it's not quite a folder in that it has to be carried with a special sheath. it's not quite a fixed blade since it has some sort of button lock? so it offers the best of neither? maybe i'm missing the obvious? seems gimicky to me...guess maybe that's the draw.....fun to play with?

seems like a wannabe Kershaw ripcord.

The Ripcord's unique, patented design provides the strength and stability of a fixed blade knife, yet stores as compactly as a folding knife. The key is Kershaw's "Out the Front" (OTF) design.

Really looks like an accident waiting to happen.

I was given one of these folders a few years back as a gift and had the same problem. I couldn't get it to hold and edge for anything. I finally got ambitious one day and started with 220 grit wet-or-dry paper on an old mouse pad and worked my way up to 3000 grit, giving it an entirely new, convex edge. That worked. The edge is polished like glass and it's sharp as all get out and it seems to be holding the edge MUCH better. Although, I do admit, I wouldn't label mine a "hard use" blade. Anyway, I'm happy to say that a knife I never cared much for is now doing a pleasant job of casual work. I like it much more now that it's been converted to convex.
