You can only get certain configurations.

Mine has serrated blade (not my pref) and three flat head screwdrivers. It has no saw, which I'd want. But for the price, does the job fine.

Are these suckers modular?

Check out Gerber's web page (sorry, don't have the URL handy). You can "custom build" your own multi-tool. Expensive though; the one I built for myself -- but didn't actually buy -- would have been $80.

It is a bit expensive at $80, but you get to pretty much customize the entire tool including color. I have seen different configurations for sale at Walmart for as little as $29.00 so you may just want to look around a little to see what different stores may have in stock. But if all else fails, you can have your own made up.

Gotta admit I only have the one Gerber so can't pass judgement on the others but man that sucker really pinches hard when using the pliers. I'm talking major blood blisters when ever I use the thing. The tool part of it is great just those damn pliers. The other thing is mine is old as in just came out so could be the newer ones have improved.

Arizona,

I hit the BYO site for Gerber - it's half of a great concept. What's missing is that you have a choice of tool sets, not of individual components.

Maybe their next version, though. You Gerber folks listening?

Mike

Mike, you should check out the Leatherman Supertool. With the tool adapter you can customize your kit by getting whatever 1/4" bits you want. The adapter also fits the original Leatherman but IMHO the Supertool is vastly superior in terms of function and comfort in use.

Phantom,

I did check out the Leatherman tools at the same time. I liked the Wave, and have read good things about it here.

With the Gerber, I like the fact that the handles are like this [] versus the LM's like this ][. I also like the fact that all tools lock on thg Gerber. Do they on the LM? Didn't look like it. And the Gerber saw is replaceable - use for wood or metal, depending on the saw you slap in there. And a little cheaper.

It was a tough decision, though.

Strider:

The old Gerbers were notorious for pinching like a <Insert foul beast here> They changed the angle on them a bit, and they don't pinch unless you manage to get most of the meat of your hand inside (Not that I've never done that...)

The new ones with the locks I do not like, I preferred the middle ones with the better angle, the straight blade, and no lock. But mine walked away in the hands of some crummy scout who's latrine I was fixing... Oh well, the swisstool I replaced it with is bigger, bulkier and slower, but sturdier, more solid, and easier on the hands...

Hi Michael,

Complete modularity is still much to ask for. But on the other hand "almost everybody" is making multitools now, so there are many options. Take look for example at Knifecenter's Multitool comparisation chart or Pocket Tool section at knife.com
or ... and so on

I am sure you can pick something you like.

Why is complete modularity too much to ask for?

It's just a question of engineering, and I believe it's what they're heading toward.

Mike

There are enough multi tools out there where you could get any configeration that you wanted.IMHO
Have a Gerber,Laetherman [with all the bells and whistles]and a Leatherman Wave. What more could a mere mortal ask for.

True. But I thought the point of a multitool was to have just one.

You're right of course, you could have many. But I suspect that the next generation of these will have a "roll your own" feature.
