Gerber Obsidian

It's funny you should ask since I just got the '08 catalog in the mail today and had my first look at it. I've only seen photos of it though.

The drivers look a bit underwhelming but that's sorta the point I guess. The catalog says it has a "high-grade" blade but the link indicates that it's "440 Stainless". For something that's a knife first, I'm surprised that they didn't use something better than 440.

My last Gerber folder was a Applegate-Fairbairn Combat folder--that was ages ago. I'm not familiar with their current folders or the quality of their "plunge (piston) lock".

If you just want a basic folder that's economical, I'd suggest a Spyderco Delica or a Benchmade Griptilian. The Victorinox One-hand Trekker might be a good compromise for a multi-tool guy that wants a folder but doesn't want to give up all the tools.

spoonrobot,

Send an email to "sales at gerbergear.com" with your mailing address. Put catalog request in your subject. I received the catalog 2 days after I requested it--they're quick!

Here's a scan of part of the description for the Obsidian:

I chopped off the top part of the scan by accident. But the website actually has more information than the catalog.

ive had this knife for about 2 months now. I love it. im a butcher at grocery store and it serves all my tasks well. cutting carboard, plastic straps..etc. It has a great lock and safety, with absolutly no blade play. :)

Ditto, I just ordered a couple more for myself. I use mine all the time at work (I'm an IT geek). Blade locks down nice and solid, and the tools, while not great, let me open a PC case if I happen to leave my Leatherman in my office.

The tools on the Buck Xtract are a lot better, but the Buck is a lot thicker too.
