Ground Rule One: This is not a Gerber bashing thread. We all know that Gerber's quality has slipped a bit.
Ground Rule Two: This is not a Wal-Mart bashing thread. Everyone knows that Wal-Mart will shamelessly persue any means to bring American and International consumers the lowwest price possible, no matter what the cost.

I have a trio of Older Gerber folders: An LST Ultra-Light 400 (new number is 6009); An LST Magnum 600 (new number is 6038); And a Gator 625 (new number is 6069).

The 400 and the 625 say "Portland OR USA" on one side, and "Gerber 400/625" on the other. The 600 has "Gerber" on one side, and "U.S.A. 600" on the other. All knives are missing the etched Gerber logo that appears in the middle of the blade on current models.

Would someone please tell me what the new knives say at the base of the blades, and where they are made? Also, can anyone tell for certain what kind of steel these currently use? "400 series", as stated on the packaging, and on their web site couldn't be more vague. Imagine a menu at a steak house that just said "meat" instead of "Sirloin."

Also, could anyone pinpoint the date, plus or minus a year, when Gerber trucked the majority of their business off shore?

Thanks to all.

I used to have an LST that was made in the usa. It was a good blade until i lost it  because the plastic clip loosened up and fell out of my pocket. I don't know what the new gerbers have on them, but mine didn't have any logo or anything, just said Gerber 400, Portland, OR.

I don't know if this helps.

Are gerber's multi tools still made in the usa? Is their quality as good as what they used to be? (I have a 3 or 4 year old 400 multisport - the compact one)

I recently purchased a Mini-Covert from Wally-World and it says on the blade... (sniffle, sniffle):( ...Taiwan.

But, the MP400 I just bought proudly displays U.S.A. on the handle.:D

I've checked a few dozen websites in the last half hour and none of them help to shed any lite on the blade material of any of the LST models. The most info. I've found contains references to high carbon stainless steel which may or may not be true. Maybe 420HC?

the 1st type of gerber multitool made=best multitool i own. the knife blade was even polished!!

I still absolutely looooove my Gerber USA made rubber coffin handled bowie. Fantastic knife, and truly the last of a breed.
