I am looking at fixed blade knives. Does anyone have an opinion on the Gerber Gator or the Benchmade Rant? The price difference isn't critical, just looking for overall comments, either way.

The new Benchmade Rant's are nice. If the Gerber Gator is in 154cm or ATS 34 and made in the us, I have heard good things about them. Benchmade makes a quality product, and even their oversees and entry level offerings are excellent. Gerber's quality is spotty lately, though their USA made stuff is still considered to be pretty good.

Edit: I just did a quick search. The majority of the Gator's that I found at sites did not list steel or manufacture company, which leads me to believe they are not 154cm USA made. Go with the Benchmade Rant.

Go with the BM. Gerber usually false advertises it's steel anyway. Most of their blades are "440 Surgical Stainless" because most people don't know there are different types of 440 steel, and the only useful kinds are 440C and 440V. But Gerber, mainly uses 440A which is terrible. Yes it may be "surgical stainless" because it is very corrosion resistant, but doesn't it hold an edge at all. But let's face it, scalpels need to cut skin, and that doesn't really dull a blade.

154CM is a good steel.

Spyderco Moran. It was written up in last months, or this months, Field and Stream. An unbelievable small fixed blade. It was a clip point blade, and they sledge hammered it through a stump and it didn't break. Small and nice.

Otherwise, get the Benchmade.

I have a plain edge Gator without the guthook, nice solid knife, very lightweight, I like it, and it holds an edge good too.

Welcome to BF!

outta the 2 "Benchmade"
Like Jack said check out the Ontario Rats and Fallknivens also.
very nice stuff.

Thanks for all of the advice. I will look at the other knives that have been suggested.
