My cousin bought me a Winchester knife from Walmart and i heard in another thread that Gerber makes Winchester knives. Is this true? Are the Winchester fixed blade kniives anygood at all or are they junk? I know its full tang and seems to be rock solid. What metal is the blade? Any info would be appreciated.

The Winchester name is actually licensed for use by more than one company, Winchester knives show up from:

Gerber, imports from China
Carolina Knife & Tool, imports from China (I am not sure, but CK&T may also be owned by Gerber)
Blue Grass Cutlery, contracts made by Queen.

Years ago (when it's products were made in America), Zenith had the motto, "The quality goes in before the name goes on". It appears that Winchester has reversed that motto by whoring out its name, like so many others, to China.

Blue Grass Cutlery, contracts made by Queen.

Now these are some very fine knives of the group of companies using the Winchester name.

Winchester is a Olin trademark. They license it out to all sorts of companies for making all sort of stuff. Winchester firearms, for example, were made by the US Repeating Arms Corp.- a subsidiary of Browning. Your knife is imported by Carolina Knife and Tool- a division of Gerber. They pay royalties to use the trademark.

The demise of Winchester is truly a sad thing.. Winchester was and is a part of American history. For many years they made a very high quality firearm. Now, as mentioned before, they are nothing but a name...

Olin Winchester(ammunition) owns the name and licences it out to FN for guns and apparently to Gerber(owned by Fiskars) for knives.
