Gerber Prodigy knife question

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum, and quite new to blades too.. :P

I got a little question for you. I juste received my Gerber Prodigy, and I noticed something that I hope you'll be able to help me with.
I noticed while looking at some pictures of the knife that some of them had the gerber logo on the blade, and others juste had GERBER written on it.
Mine came with GERBER on the blade. I was wondering, do you know what's the difference, if there is one between the two? I know that once the prodigy came in 12c27 SANDVIK, and for a short time 440 I believe and then the new one are 420HC. Mine is one made of 420HC. Would it be just that the older model came with the logo on the blade and the recent one just with GERBER on them?

Thanks for your time, I appreciate it,
Have a nice day

Hi and welcome.

I've had a few of either type, and haven't noticed any performance differences. I don't buy or use Gerber much these days but when I did, nothing noticeable changed between the two. I think they just updated their logos on a few models to include only the word. Someone who still extensively uses the brand here (although I don't think there are many) may know of a difference, but in my day to day use, both were the same.

Enjoy your new purchase!

I've bought a handful of Gerbers over the past few years, and they have changed the logo back and forth a couple of times that I can recall. I bought an Air Ranger folder (import) at a big box store that advertised it in their print ad with just the symbol/emblem, but mine said GERBER. A Prodigy tanto I bought recently for a gift was the same, and I believe the Prodigy and LMF II I bought a few years back are too. The USA-made models will almost always state the steel type on the packaging.

Here is Gerber's official response to this question:
Thank you for contacting Gerber Blades and your inquiry regarding the “Logo” on our Gerber Gear products. The logo shows the mountain with a knife which is no longer being produced but may still be seen on older product inventory through retailers.

2012 was an exciting year for Gerber Legendary Blades as we introduced our newest Logo. The new Logo process was slowly implemented into our existing Product Line as we edged further into 2012. Many of our products experienced a delay acquiring the new logo, largely due to “Tooling” and it’s availability for each product.

During this process, products were etched with the word “GERBER” as we initialized the new Tooling for the products newest Logo.

Many retailers will continue to sell through their existing inventory with both the older original Logo prior to release of the newest Logo. Listed below is a sample of our Logo’s historically

Man, the "legendary blades" thing still cracks me up. Oh, Gerber. So adorable. :D

Hey, thanks everyone for your time, I appreciate it. As I said, i'm fairly new to knives and I think a prodigy for the price was a good starter and I really liked the design. I honestly don't think I'll get through it, but hey only time will tell. As I saw that blade and all of its reviews, it's not a top notch quality, but not a shity blade either for the price a got it (40$ CAN) new, I think a couldn't go wrong with it, and as I said it looks really great. I bought few weeks ago a Gerber Bear grylls paracord knife, not a bad knife, it does what it has to do but, the Chinese steel won't hold an edge to well, it will probably be improved with the 420HC Prodigy that I juste bought. And quite honestly I bought the bear grylls field sharpener with my Bear grylls paracord, and THIS thing really has convinced me to never buy something with the bear grylls logo on it, it did more damage to my knife than anything good, well first it didn't come sharp at all, and when I tried it on it, it just got worse so, now I sharpened it with a honing stone, it's not razor sharp, but cut easily through paper and catch quite hard on fingernails, so it's not bad, but I know that soon, if I use it much it'll get dull fast. On the other hand, th prodigy came Razor sharp, litterally shaving hair on my forearm, so no need for now to touch the blade, so we'll see how long it takes before any touch up.

So again, thnks for your time, I'll try to appreciate my new purchase.

It indeed looks really good, but maybe I'm strange, but I like the serrations on my prodigy. I May someday need and want a straight edge knife, and when I will, I'll take a look at that knife, do you know the MSRP of that thing?

I like the serrations too for certain things but I like the option for both. Gerber never wanted to make the LMF II or the Prodigy in both configurations so designed a new knife - go figure :)

The pricing is roughly the same as the Prodigy so it will be a good value IMO. They are making the Strongarm with or without serrations and in a few colors so yeah, long overdue.

Both my 12c27 sandvic and 420hc ones only mentioned the steel type on the packaging. Nothing on the knife.
