I found this new Gerber Profile folder at Dick's Sporting Goods last week, thought it looked interesting and for $24.99 it seemed an OK risk.

BLADE:4 inches of "surgical steel" (Gerber's mystery steel, whatever that is?, if I had to bet I'd say 440A) with a Titanium coating.
HANDLE: full steel liners with rubber "gator grip" scales. (VERY grippy and gets more so when wet)
ORIGIN:Package says "Made in China", but it is not on the knife itself. (shame on Gerber for that, skirting the law a tad.)

I don't have a ruler handy, but overall it's a little bigger than a Griptilian.

No pocket clip, comes with a nylon sheath.

Out of the package, the blade was very sharp, shaved arm hair and could cleanly split a 8.5X11 sheet of typing paper top to bottom.

I broke down a few cardboard boxes with it, and reduced a 40 foot piece of nylon maritime cord to a pile of 3 inch sections with it.

Edge would no longer shave, but a short round with a lansky sharpener and it's back to shaving!

The handle and blade have ridges for a thumb rest on them that works fine.

The handle comes recessed for right handers to use the thumbstud.

It is not for southpaws however.

It was usable this way, but annoying, and since I am left handed, I used a razor blade to trim down the scale for me. Probably could have made it look better, but hey, it's a $25.00 beater! :D

The liner lock:

Man that looks awful thin! But there is zero play in the blade, in any direction, it's locked up solid, even after I spine whacked it 10 times on a board (after taking some safety measures), to try and make it fail.

No slips, and still solid!

Not the be all end all of folders, but not to bad for the money.

I like the blade shape - looks pretty reasonable for an EDC.

BTW - how is the sheath? I've noticed many of the Gerber sheaths (as well as other brands) have been improving of late.

It's the typical nylon sheath Gerbers tend to come with. I admit I am not the biggest fan of Gerber, but my brother is and he typically needs to replace their sheaths about every 2 years, for the ones he carries everyday.

The stitching on the belt loop is usually the first thing to give.

Nice knife but the those sheaths are crap, mine brakes at the belt loop aswell. I think they should double stitch to reinforce it. They best gerber sheath ive seen is on my LMF2.

Hmmm...I was eyeballing the fixed version at Wally World over the weekend. According to their website, they're blowing them out for $15 at the moment. Maybe I ought to go back and pick one up?:thumbup:

I'll just bet you that the blade steel is "400-series" stainless. That
means it can be as crappy as Gerber wants to make it. If I'm going to
buy a linerlock, I'll get the three-for-$24 type because I think they'll
ultimately be at least as good as present day Gerbers. "Surgical stainless"
is generally something that's used once and then thrown away.
