Gerber SL Carbon Fiber impressions

He likes his SL 3.25 quite a lot. I think he carries it more than his Benchmade 940 or his old Spydie (don't know what model).

I've almost bought one several times. My only concern is that the liner lock seems a little thin. I will probably end up buying one to give as a gift this holiday season, just so I can own it for a day or two. I doubt I'd end up carrying it much as I have a William Henry Lancet in carbon and a Benchmade 941 in carbon with a D2 blade....:) .

I've seen the SL3.25 for around $60.00. With an ATS-34 blade and a carbon fiber handle it seems like a steal even if it is made in China.

I could be mistaken, but I thought that I saw the "Made in China" marking on the blade last time I looked at one.

This brings up an interesting idea. If the blade really is ATS-34, but made in China, I would be suspect of the heat treat more so than the steel. Would it be possible to send the blade to someone like Paul Bos and have it re-heat-treated (bad grammer)? Is it possible to heat treat a steel more than once or is it a one time thing?

Weird.. i didn't know China made good stuff.. cool :)

yeah.. ATS-34 is one of the more difficult steels to heat treat.. so there's a possibility that it would be done wrong in China.. but i dunno if its possible to "re-do" a heat treat? because like if it was Over-heated and got too brittle, you would need to anneal it.. but i dont know if that's possible with ats-34.. if its under heated, i guess u could re-heat to the correct temperature and the re-quench it.. but would the carbides in the steel get all funkY..? meh.. maybe i'll just shut up cuz i dont really know what im talking about :)

its a beautiful knife tho.. i've seen pics of it and i always really wanted one of them.. they remind me of the Klotzli Walker designed carbon fibre knives.. now those are pretty.

I got my dad one of the G-10 versions and I'm pretty sure it was from Tiawan. He's not much into maintainance so didn't notice one of the clip screws get loose then got lost. Sent it to gerber, new screw, no charge, no problem.:)

Hard to beat for the price IMO.

You a Zelazny fan?

Taiwan might be right. I guess mentally I group Taiwan and China together which is probably wrong by today's standards.
