Hey guys, been browsing the forum a while and just deciding to post and tap what knowledge I can from yall!

Wanting some opinions on the two knives above, the application would be general use ( camping, sort of a utility knife) and back packing, mostly in Texas and possibly some Colorado and Arkansas. My two main concerns regarding both blades is that
1) the Ontario, sporting its 1095 carbon steel will rust to easy for my liking.
2) That Gerber steadfast will not be tough enough, and also that people seem to think its a crappy steel in general.

So give me some feed back if you will!

I like everything better about the Ontario, especially the handle. Most people don't like finger grooves when using a knife outdoors for an extended period of time - handle should work with and without gloves and for mutiple grips.

The Ontario is a much better knife. Clean and dry and WD-40 after use and no worries. Or upgrade to Ontario Gen. II in 5160.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was slightly leaning toward the Ontario already, for some of the reason mentioned above. And would it be better to clean and oil at the end of the day when I know I won't be using it during the night or like at the end of a couple day trip?

Sorry for the ignorance just a little new to the knife game!

End of the trip for oil, just keep blades dry and clean by quick wipe on your clothes or rag after you use them, stainless or carbon. Even after I open a package at home I wipe my knife blade on shirt or shorts out of habit. Clean and dry always with oil now and then works for all tools and firearms.

Buy some Tuff-Cloth for extended woods use, as you can pack it with your gear, as well as having a dry film protection on a tool you'll be using frequently. Dry film is better than oil for long periods in my opinion, although I am comfortable using both.
