I know how we all can't stand Gerber, but has anyone tried their new line of traditional stockmans?

I've had a few Gerber knives. Can't say that I can't stand 'em. The only Gerber knife I have left is my trusty Magnum LST Jr. (USA made).

While their stuff has slipped in quality, I'll reserve judgment on their "Stockman's" 'til I see one. I'll assume that, like most of their newer knives, they're made in China or Taiwan. That said, Rough Rider and Steel Warrior have got pretty favorable reviews as users.

I think I'll order one and do a review for you guys here. I'll post the review in this thread.

The knife is on the way. I'll let you know in a couple weeks. I'll be up in Asheville, N.C. next week. Hopefully the stockman will get here before then and I can take it on vacation with me.

Hey Mora! I'll be on my way to Nags Head N.C. next week. I don't know how close, if close at all, that is to Asheville. I've never been up there. But as for the Gerber stockmans, I'll wait til I see one up close to talk.

"Stockman" is name of the series of knives. The "Stockman" series has a one-blade lockback trapper, and a smallish lockback. It also has a real Stockman.
I'd imagine the "locking main blade" to be a liner lock with a backspring.

I happen to like my Gerber Flayer and Paul knives. The new stockman series look nice, just wish they hadn't used stainless...

I like my current made Gerber products (except the Nautilus, but that is because it is a nextt to useless design). I don't imagine Gerber uses carbon at all anymore- most compaines don't, especially knives made oversees.
They look interesting. I may have to pick one up.

I got the stockman today so I'll start this off with some pics.

Overall the fit and finish is very good. The stag looks great. Both sides match up very well. Shaving sharp out of the box. No blade play on any of blades.

The main blade has a lockback. In my opinion a slipjoint on the main would be better. I guess because I'm used to that. But, not saying at all that it is hard to close.

Will post more in the coming weeks.

That really doesn't look too bad.

Its obviously a thick Sum-pup. Three springs and some rather thick blades. I'd like to see the primary grinds a bit deeper/thinner at the edge so the secondary grind/edge isn't so pronounced.

Otherwise, I like it. Thanks for the pics.

(edits mine) I used to live in Sylva, about forty miles out of Asheville. Nags Head is about 350-400 miles from Asheville, depending on your route.

Okay, about that Gerber - is there a trend among the mfrs. back toward the old traditional patterns? That Stockman looks real purty . . .

thx - cpr
