My friend recently bought an ultimate pro online and I was immediately sceptical about it.
Mainly, the color is off, its grey and it should be black.
The box looks funny, it not legit, cause all the pros Ive seen were sold in blister packages.
And thirdly, there is a major gaping hole between the tang and the handle scales that allows light to shine through. I dont believe someone like Gerber would tolerate that kind of a mistake.
Anyways, here are some pictures, I will post more if its needed.
Thank you for your time!
p.s. I hope I got the section right, Im new :D

Yes it does look like a Gerber, I don't think someone would try to make a clone of this knife. You may thinking of the Gerber of days past, some of the best built knives at the time, so sad.

Not a fake, this is very typical of Gerber's build quality.
I was wrong, good investigating OP.

I've seen clones of this knife before and this very well could be ( need better pictures to be sure ) they counterfeit them because they will counterfeit anything popular with a name on it that people know . If M-Tech became popular and somehow known for quality they'd counterfeit them.
Gerber does have quality control, but they're Chinese knives are made to compete with the low cost of everything else out there. They could make them in their Portland Oregon factory but those who buy them wouldn't pay American made prices for.

The people from gerber just answered me. They said that the package is fake, that they only sell the knife in blister packages as I thought.
They also said that it doesnt come in gray color, as this one here. So its probably a fake...
Here are some more photos, a serial number is missing bellow the fire logo it seems, and the hole i was talking about is somewhat visible :D

Fake or real it's very likely of the same quality...probably made in the same Chinese factory.

I have always thought this could be the case. 1 shift in the factory makes the real version, then a night shift comes in and produces counterfeits. Its just too easy not to be suspicious of that.

Comparing to pictures on knifecenter.com the swedge also looks not quite right, fwiw. Though I suppose it could be an optical illusion.

Return it for a refund and get something better. There are a lot of options. Do some searching on here and you'll find plenty.

G'day and welcome to the forums!

For the most part, Gerber is no longer considered to be a high quality brand. There have been serious quality issues with their Bear Grylls line especially. Having said that, the Ultimate Pro seems to be a better knife than previous versions (better steel, full tang, grind more well suited to camp work). While a cash refund would mean you could get something that's better value, I wouldn't discount the Ultimate Pro out of hand. It is heavy and expensive for what it is, but it may still be a capable knife.

If you decide to buy something different, tell us your budget, what you want to use it for (eg hunting, skinning, batoning firewood, carving etc) and what drew you to the Ultimate Pro, and I am sure you will get some great recommendations :)

Finally, well done on spotting a fake!!

That's definitely not a real Gerber ( not that I'd consider a Chinese Gerber to be a real one anyway )
Even though the bg stuff kinda sucks Gerber is still a good company regardless of what people may think. They still make some good affordable knives here in America and imploy American workers ( something that's more of a rarity these days )
I wouldn't by a Chinese Gerber product as I've been burned by two, but will buy any American made Gerber knife and would consider one made in Taiwan as my old Gerber ridge is a great little knife.

Hey onojoe, I was thinking about that as well. And im sure that is indeed so. The copy is just too perfect...
The blade is decentish, it was put to the test, but after some use, the edge was mostly fine, but would not cut paper as easily :S
He is generally satisfied though, but he seemed to be more into the aesthetics of the knife, which is why I started this whole quest to prove it to him that he has a fake.
Oh, he bought it online from a random dude, so there would be no refunds whatsoever :D
Anyways, thanks for the help guys, I was planing to get an original ult pro eventually, but after what you all said, Im discouraged :(
Are there any solid bushcraft knives out there for about 40-70 dollars, something like schf42d?
I like it a lot, but cant seem to find any in Europe though :grumpy:

Condor has a bunch in that price range that would be worth a serious look.

The schrade schf42d is a pretty good blade. It was designed by a member of the forums here. I think it's the one schrade knife I'd buy actually.

As others have said, check condors offerings, as well as Becker (bk16 and bk10).

If you want to stick with Gerber, id look at the strongarm and prodigy models. I think they are the best if the bunch.

And good eye on catching this as a fake :).
