I get CPSC recall notices via email and had to laugh at this one -- "Gerber is recalling Winchester branded Hunting Knife sets due to laceration hazard"

... my first thought --- ummm yeah, it's a knife.

Apparently the interchangeable blade latch can fail and release from the handle -- and thats the real laceration risk -- not cool.

Involves Winchester Hunting Knife Set with model number 31-000801. Made in China with four interchangeable blades and sold for about $20 at your favorite sporting goods store.

More details in case anyone owns one: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml12/12030.html

That sucks. I'm young and so don't remember Gerber before it was bought before Fiskar, but I understand they made good knives back then. Makes me wonder what happened because of all the Gerbers I've handled, the only one that seems worth anything is the LMF II. Not great becasue of the serrations but a good knife. I just dont think they compete with anyone like Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw, etc. in quality.

Agree - Gerber is in a different class but offer some solid knives for the buck.

I didn't post with the intention of flaming Gerber or starting a debate about Gerber quality. Plenty of other threads covering every manufacturer out there.
-- Just found humor in a recall notice for a knife due to laceration hazard.

Gerber seem to have fallen off the wagon...I have a couple older models but the new one I have I kinda regret buying, and I have a gnarly scar from it too where the lock stuck, put some pressure on it and it spun round on to the flank of my hand. They might fill the niche for your average joe but a lot of us knife knuts know for the same money you could have something better.
