Gerber, in its description of the Gator drop point fixed blade hunter, uses the phrase "high carbon stainless steel"...can someone tell me EXACTLY what that means?

It means they want you to think it has good "high carbon" sharpening ability, but it very "stainless" rust resistent.

Now I'll throw in my 2 cents. I have owned a Gator serrator and a few other Gerbers over the years, and I am not a fan of their blades. IMHO they will take a fair edge, which is good because out o fthe box they ussually need one, but they will NOT hold an edge very well, and they will rust fairly easy.

dga,

If it is high carbon then it is not highly stainless. High Carbon steel rust. If it rust then how could it be stainless? Well, for the answer to that question you will have to go all the way back to the beginning of time but, since we don't have that much time....here you go.

It is an inside joke between knife making companies that most of the knife buyer don't know (kind of like surgical stainless steel, ha, ha, ha). You have to ask the company to see if they will let you in on the joke. It is really funny.

Drop point Gator is also available with ats-34 blade for about 10$ more that the standard blade. I have clip point gator with that probably 425 steel and that wont hold edge well. Gators handle is one of most ergonomic folder handles around. Gator with ats-34 blade is a very good buy.

I agree with The Last Confederate. I tried using a Gerber EZ-Out as my work knife (and believe me, in that last job, my work knives were put to the test). I could never get that knife to keep and edge for more than a couple of days. Now, I carry a Gerber Paul 2PM as my almost-sheeple-friendly EDC, and have never had a problem. Of course, it is about 20 yaers old (I think), and I'm sure since the Fiskars buy-out (or before I suppose) their steel has changed. So... IMHO Gerber's current standard steel is really sub-standard.

Just my 2 cents. Sorry Gerber fans.

I think when the Gerber EZ-Out first came out, it was 440A, but it may be 425 Modified. The ATS-34 version is a step up and a good bargain. In any case, The standard EZ-Out and the Gator are popular with the average working-class Joe and are easy to sharpen.

I own some Gerbers from years ago.
The one Gerber I'm quite interested in now is the Specter. But unfortunately I haven't seen any I could handle in person in any stores around here, so don't know for sure, but IMO it's a pretty cool drop point tactical design, with 154CM steel in the blade.

Gotta say, for me, Gerber has fallen off the radar. I hear decent things about their multi-tools, but I like my Leatherman Wave just fine. As far as folders go, I wouldn't even consider buying a new Gerber. :(
