Ive recently acquired a workshop full of old tools in the countryside in Germany, i found an assortment of axes and I would love to know more about them, it would be great if someone here has some knowledge to share with me or advice on how I can find out more about them. I know 2 of them are 1600 splitting axes, but the rounded one is quite unusual, the handle is set on one side and not central, what is it for ?
How do I find out where they are from ? age ect ? whats the best way to clean them?

Sounds great!
We would need some pictures to start.
A picture hosting site will help with that.

The bulk of them not really worth much comment, suffice it to say house axes. The one singled out is a specialty axe used in the vineyards of the Mossel called Winzeraxt or Steckbeil. Some idea of use, we can imagine from such names. Cleaning is not much necessary beyond wire brush and some steel-wool. That they are all within the last hundred years in age is a safe bet.
