I'm a big fan of D2 steel. I have the Benchmade HD Mini Hardtail with a D2 blade and it's just a great and very tough steel (especially for the money).

I recently heard of "German" D2 steel (which comes on William Henry knives) and I was wondering if there is a big difference between Benchmade's D2 and William Henry's German D2 ?

It all has to do with manufacturing, all American D2 is not the same and neither is German D2. However, you can rest assured that BM's D2 is of the highest quality. The German, I would have no idea. William Henry knives are high end fancy nancy knives, doesn't really mean much. Has anyone ever put these knives to the test? Would they hold up like a BM would?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I feel confident about such steels from Crucible , Carpenter and Bohler since they have been tested so many times.

I was just curious about the various D2's .

I've got several knives with D2 from custom makers, and its all seems to be the same. I think D2 is D2 no mater where it comes from.
The only difference would be in the heat treating, and most do it at about the same hardness.

That said, I've never heard of German D2, but would think it would be the same as any other D2. If William Henry is using it I'm sure its good stuff, and no less a steel than American D2.

Yep, marketing rules; just like the non-difference between Blue and Black class knives~! ;)

Just got a 710 in D2. Can't believe I waited so long, what a great knife.
I am looking forward to checking it out.
Cheers

GRRR! Don't make me jealous! I still want a 13150-1. I bought one from the cruise ship knife store but I didn't read the listing closely. I got the CE when I REALLY wanted the PE. I am still waiting to have the funds for it from an other source!

The best is R2D2.

You're telling me! I missed the PE version of the 13100 from them, but I may spring for the coated version and just polish the coating off (getting rid of the H-D logo). If I can get the Benchmade logo off well enough, I'll send it back to them to have them lasermark it again.

Well, I have an Adamas, a BM710, and a WARN barrage tanto. All Crucible D2. I also have a DPx gear HEST 2.0 lefty which is German D2. All of them took forever to re-profile and polish. And I mean forever! But in the end all were hair popping sharp and have stayed that way for quite some time with minimal stropping.

So is there a difference? Unless you work in a laboratory, I doubt anyone could tell the difference. The geometry is where you'll see more or less cutting ability.

In the end, It is hard to go wrong with a well made D2 knife.
