I recently picked up a slipjoint at a flea market.....a German Eye Brand Canoe with pretty nice genuine stag handles...inscribed on the main blade is the signature name "Jim Bowie..Premium Quality Handmade"..also the oval sheild on the handle has the name "Jim Bowie". Anyone know what type of steel was used on the knife ? Thanks for any Help !

If that is a gray patina on the blades, I'd guess a carbon steel like 1095, (sometimes called BLUE steel... :D ). I believe Schlieper uses MOSTLY carbon steel. If it's not a patina, I don't know...

What does the tang stamp read (all stamps, if readable)?

Here is a website (not affiliated) with a little ditty about Eye Brand.

The use of Jim Bowie's name seems to have been quite popular with the German makers in the 60s and 70s.

Nice find, Gramps.

If you say so rev_jch...... I just said LIKE 1095.... :)
1075 (.75 carbon)....1084 (.84 carbon)....1095 (.95 carbon) all else pretty similar, I believe.

Anyway, just trying to contribute.

I like 1095 also. There is not that much of a noticeable difference between 1075 and 1095.
