I just had a peculiar experience with a new slip joint and was wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing - and why.
Yesterday I picked up a new German Eye Copperhead with brown pick bone handles (GE GX). The handles looked particularly dirty like the knife had (and probably was) sitting in the display case for years. So when I got home, I oiled and wiped it down, and even used a toothbrush on the handles. The usual light grunge came off, but the handles still looked dull and dirty. So I decided to give it a bath under hot running water.
As soon as the water hit the knife, the water turned blood red. I was so shocked I almost dropped the knife; I thought somehow I had cut myself. But no, it was the knife, and it took a good minute of rinsing before the water ran clear. Then, while drying and re-oiling the knife, I wind up with red-brown stains on my hands (which as of this writing have survived several hand washings and my monthly shower). The knife handles, by the way, look great now and did not suffer any color loss.
So what gives? Presumably, I encountered powdered (?) water-based (?) dye residue (?) from the handles (?). And okay, its a German Eye, so maybe it cleared QC, but still, how weird. Anyone else ever encounter this?
