German Gentlemen's pocket for father

My dad's parents came from Germany. I am looking to get him a German made pocket knife as gift. He always carried a pocket knife when I was a kid...but a 50-cent knife...nothing fancy at all. A gentlemen's knife is what I am looking for.

I am, admittedly, fairly ignorant on knives. But I have been reading as much as I can on these forums for the past month. Thus far I have found the following sites to purchase from,
http://www.german-knife.com/
http://www.worldknives.com/regions.php?i=3

I am guessing that I am missing quite a bit of information. Any recommendations regarding sites/manufacturers/custom-designers/preferences for your particular style of knife that you have found/etc would be greatly appreciated. ~$100 USD is my range...give or take...

Thank you.

Boker makes some very nice knives, both contemporary and traditional. They also make Henckles and Hen & Rooster pocketknives as well if I'm not mistaken. Look at some of the more reputable dealers on the 'net and you should be able to find something you like. Names such as

AG Russell
New Graham
Knifeworks
Knives Plus
Knife Center

There are others but this will give you a good start. Take a look a the 140th Anniversary Boker knives that are being release periodically this year. There are some great designs in their lineup right now.

Good luck.

+1 Boker

I've always thought this was a good looking knife:

Boker is great but there are a few interesting smaller brands as well. I see that Worldknives has a good selection. The Mercator K55 is a real classic for example.

From the more traditionally designed Bokers, I do really love the Folding Hunter White. It's not on worldknives but you can find it on the net.

In addition, you can check out the German Eye (Carl Schlieper) models from the manufacturer www.pocketknives.de
My best recommendation for a classic German folder is the small brand Robert Klaas. Their precisely handmade Monolith 2000 folder is exquisite. I once saw them for sale for around 66 euro but normally they're around 100 euro which is above your limit. Still, worth a search.

I don't want to seem pushing my little video reviews, but if you'd like to see these knives in the hand then have a look at clips 5, 10, 20, 60

I bought a selection of German-made Bokers last year - from their Tree Brand 'classics' line. They are distributed here in the US by 'Boker USA' - who happens to have a winter sale going on now. The classics are all carbon steel, so some care is required. Here is my most recent favorite, bought from a common 'Evil-bayer' dealer:

While some Tree Brand classics run $70+, judicious shopping can find them at half of that or so. Also, German Bull and Hen & Rooster make nice German-made similar knives - and use SS. I gifted my sons with one of each for Christmas. I am not sure if they saw the significance. I remember my Dad's old 'Tree Brand' from half a century ago... cleaning his pipe with that smaller blade. I finally bought a few for myself.

There is also Puma - they still make many of their non-IP line in Germany. Here is a trio of 'Stockman' models:

The top, above, is a Tree Brand in jigged red bone, middle is a Puma in stag, and bottom is a Buck (USA) 301. The Tree Brand is carbon steel (CS) while the other two are in stainless. Note the reversed secondary blades on the US-made vs the German made knives. I've had the Buck for many years as a 'user'. The Boker is my favorite as to looks and quality. Many US dealers have all three barnds, too. Good luck.
